Kixie saves the day!

Yesterday, to ring in the new year, I lifted something wrong,
resulting in immobilizing myself with back pain.

Today, faced with the dreary prospect of lying abed, I had my son
string my 24' wire in my bedroom, from the curtain rod to the closet
door, and put the 33' ground wire around the room, on the floor.

Now, Kixie and me and our two watts are merrily chatting away on
40m...that's much better!

Hi Lloyd,

Sorry to hear about your back! Fortunately, this is exactly the kind of
compromised operating situation "Kixie" (the KX1) was designed for,
with its built-in paddle/battery/ATU, and I'm glad it's working out.
And when the band shuts down, you can read your novel using the rig's
log-book lamp  ;)

Help?? I ran PSK all the time with my old puter, then the laptop came along
while I was in the hospital and my wife took my old puter away. Why, as a
way to make me keep my feet propped up when on the radio, it works for me,
new puter. hi hi

Ok here are the facts:

Puter: HP Pavilion  -- no serial ports all usb ports. using eithe XP or NP I
don't know what ever it came with, I'm no puter guru, shows huh?

Software is Digipan 2.0

Interface: Old soapdish Rascal with serial port, its has worked for years. I
have a serial port to usb port converter cable deal to get to usb ports on
puter.

Rig: my trusty wonderful Elecraft K2, which I've worked digital modes with
for years.

Facts: I can recieve PSK, however can only seem to control waterfall with
volume control on K2. Its very touchy.

I can't hear the PSK signals guess it has something to do with HP Pavilon, I
sure miss not hearing it. Want to tackle one thing at a time.

Can not transmit, when i try to configure the serial port, I set if for com
port 2 just like I use to do. RTS and RTR are checked just like before but I
get a message, "Error opening Com Port 2, try again".

Any ideas to help me out, like I have said before I'm very puter stupid.

Thanks, now I wonder what I should have added??

First - laptops generally have terrible soundcards. If you are at all
serious about digital modes get an external USB solution. Difference is like
day and night. But you should still be able to get Digipan running. You will
not necessarily hear the PSK.

Second - not all USB <=> serial port converters are the same. Some are
really rotten and should be thrown away, there is no such thing as a cheap
USB <=> serial converter. Get one known to work with XP, do not believe the
packing.

Third - you may actually be opening the infra-red rather than the USB <=>
serial COM port, infra-red also uses serial protocols. I am guessing that
the error is because the COM port is already open - do you have a mobile
phone or PDA software running? Have you installed anything that also uses a
COM port? (The error you get is not very informative, this is just lazy
programming.)

So I suggest,

[1] Get a Creative USB Audigy soundcard at a later date.
[2] Get a known brand USB <=> serial converter - ask for a recommendation.
[3] If possible get someone to come round and help?

I use mine in my den next to my TV chair and hooked up to my Windom.  I can
listen and have QSO's while my wife and I enjoy our "quality" time  together
watching TV (she does her quilting at the same time). The 80 Meter  option will
certainly add to the flexibility of this fine piece of equipment in  my
"secondary" shack. Thanks to all at Elecraft, and may 2006 be even more  profitable
for you than 2005 thereby enabling all of us to enjoy this wonderful  hobby
