Thanks to all who replied on this. I've ordered a dual band 160/80 from
Array solutions, but will also have a go at a couple of the suggested circuits (now where will I find a 2N5109 in Australia ??) David, I would also consider the DX Engineering RPA-1 which was designed by W8JI. Measurements here: http://www.w8ji.com/pre-amplifiers.htm (tutorial) http://www.w8ji.com/preamp_summary.htm (measurement summary) Available from DX engineering for $109: http://www.dxengineering.com/products.asp?ID=81 73, Bill W4ZV _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Try Futurelec.
The '5109 has strong IMD performance, but you'll probably find that it doesn't have enough gain by itself (about 11dB max). The only devices I've found after building dozens of circuits that have equivalent IMD performance and high gain (20dB) are the Gali series MMICs from Mini-Circuits, and they're much easier to use (although they are smallish, they are still very easy to use). You can order them over the net. They also have a dB or two lower NF. 73, Larry N8LP ----- Original Message ----- From: David Douglass To: [hidden email] Sent: Monday, September 13, 2004 7:22 AM Subject: [Elecraft] LF preamps Thanks to all who replied on this. Hi David,
In a gift wrapped parcel from Elecraft. The old 2N3866 is about the same at 160/80m. Probably you would not notice the difference. The MRF 580 or MRF 581 are much better I've found, especially in push-pull. But now we are getting complicated, and they are becoming scarcer here. The SMD versions have become the "in thing". 73 Geoff GM4ESD ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Douglass" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Monday, September 13, 2004 12:22 PM Subject: [Elecraft] LF preamps (now where will I find a 2N5109 in Australia ??) > > Cheers > > David. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Bob,
If it's OK with you, I'll also send this to the list in case others are interested. I am semi-retired, I do consulting work now. Most of the projects are freebies, including all the software, although I have done some specialized programs for individuals in terms of remote control mainly. It's mostly new, last updated in July. I use the E-Meter and E-Beam daily... although I haven't gotten around to finalizing the E-Beam PIC controller hardware... it's still breadboarded... and I'm now working on a little gadget that will allow me to do field strength measurements using a small phased reference antenna, log amp and voltage-to-frequency converter tied to a FRS walkie talkie to send data back to the shack, where I will use another walkie talkie and computer soundcard and software to display the azimuthal pattern. This gets rid of any interactions with the FS meter and the station. The only "product" is the SteppIR Tuning Relay which I made in response to a need expressed on the SteppIR reflector, but I am thinking of releasing the E-Meter as a kit. I'm waiting to see if QST will publish the article I sent them on it. I also submitted the receive portions of the E-Beam, but they want the transmit portions as well. They say they are still planning on publishing an article I wrote on network remote control about 18 months ago, but have rescheduled it a couple times. Once I get my K2, I'll have to think about some new software stuff for it, although many of my current programs will integrate nicely with the K2 through TRX-Manager and OLE ;-) Larry N8LP www.telepostinc.com/n8lp.html ----- Original Message ----- From: Bob Tellefsen To: Larry Phipps Sent: Monday, September 13, 2004 2:29 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] LF preamps Larry I just visited your site, after seeing the reference to your preamp. Wow, I'm impressed. Do you do all these ham projects as a moon-lighting job, or is this a full time business for you? Some really great stuff there, that I never even thought of using. I'm very interested in the E-Beam you described. I didn't see a date on the material. Is it recent, or from some time back? Any likelihood of kits for this?
