I think I'll locate - or fabricate- some thumbscrews (like the KXPD3) so I can more rapidly remove the access cover and lessen the temptation to leave cells in there. 73, Stan WB2LQF An effective but truly inelegant method is to run a screw through a wingnut. You may need to file the screwhead a bit to reduce the diameter or file clearance for the screwhead on the wingnut. If you use brass components, a little solder will preclude loosening of the wingnut from the screw. Less awful is to use an Allen socket-head screw and the little plastic "thingies" (hi!) that press over the tops and convert the Allen head screws into thumbscrews. The DC-to-Gamma Rays antenna was a dipole marketed under the "MaxRad" name. Many years ago, "miracle" antenna was a derogatory term used in the phrase: "If it works, it is a miracle." On this side of the pond, "Miracle Whip" is the trade name for a mayonnaise substitute marketed by Kraft Foods. Of all the brands of alkaline batteries I've used in gear, with the exception of no-name Chinese "hamfest specials" the worst are Ray-O-Vac which I've had leak in their unopened packaging.. years away from the expiration date. I do not understand the need for all this commotion. My KX3 has two
thumbscrews on each end. Loosen all 4 and the 2 halves are easily separated. Remove or insert batteries and then reassemble. No new screws needed, they are supplied as part of the stock assembly. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/29/2012 11:11 PM, [hidden email] wrote: > I think I'll locate - or fabricate- some thumbscrews (like the KXPD3) > so I can more rapidly remove the access cover and lessen the > temptation to leave cells in there. > 73, Stan WB2LQF ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Don, the thumbscrews I referred to relate to the MFJ-259B, not the KX3.
Sorry for the confusion. There's no problem with the KX3. I observed that the antenna analyzer spends most of its life sitting on a shelf and that means batteries can be forgotten about more easily. I thought it would be worthwhile to replace the two Phillips studs with a KX3-like thumbscrew. That would provide a little faster and easier removal/reinstallation of the access panel and encourage safer battery habits. I know you use rechargeables and keep it on a sustainer. But for those, like me, who prefer not to do that, thumbscrews offer another solution. It's amazing how the need for a small screwdriver can present such an (psychological?) obstacle to good judgement ;) 73, Stan WB2LQF.
