This an informal, nonscientific survey: Would there be any interest in leasing rather than buying a KPA1500? The full price of the amp is $6K, which with sales taxes and shipping, if applicable, would bring it to $6.5K or so. Not everyone wants to plunk that much down all at once. So I was thinking – suppose a lessor (“owner” is easier) bought the amp and leased it to the lessee (the “user”) for a monthly rate. At the end of the lease term it would either be returned or purchased for the buyout price, much like a car lease.
Do you think there would be any interest in such a deal? What monthly fee would seem fair and saleable?
I have begun thinking about the terms of the deal. The amp would be shipped directly from Elecraft to the user, so it never comes to the owner. Any problems on delivery the user works out with Elecraft. Mods, if any, during the lease would be factory installed, or not installed, and the cost shared. In short, the user never opens the chassis. Likewise for repairs, if any. Repairs made necessary solely by the user’s out-of-spec actions are done by Elecraft at the user’s cost. Insurance coverage, maybe through ARRL, for lightning and the like would be in place. At the end of the lease, if the amp is returned to the owner, it goes first to Elecraft for an inspection and tune up, at shared cost.
Years ago a partner and I had a sideline business of leasing general aviation aircraft, so I do have some tolerance for risk. Fortunately, we never had a loss. But I don’t know how much leasing demand there might be out there for a full legal limit Elecraft amp , or at what price. Any thoughts at all would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ted, KN1CBR
