Is it possible to modify the VOX sensitivity (or reduce the ALC action) so that
an operator using PSK31 could run without a PTT relay, relying upon the VOX alone - and yet, not having enough input to have the ALC kick in? I'm looking at the KSB2 schematic as I write, and it looks like the VOX and ALC are tied together... but I'm not as well versed as many of you knowledgable folk are, so maybe some one can help me figure this out. Whether the messages are posted too frequently or not is up to Eric to decide. This is one of several "commercial" postings on this list that seem to be allowed by the rules and don't get too out of hand. I've purchased the Rework Eliminator modules and the customized bezels and nameplates that are advertised here from time to time. I think I've seen mention of people offering torroid winding services. It's probably one of those things where when you like the product being advertised it's no big deal. "the toroidguy" is an approved supplier of pre-wound toroids for the Elecraft products. Mychael started winding toroids after a number of Elecraft builders found it simply not fun to wind them and some were unable to do so due to various physical limitations. He helps builders keep building who otherwise might not do so. I've seen his work. I don't mind winding toroids, but mine don't look as pretty as his <G>. He has the solder pots and the experience needed to deliver a first-class winding and stripping job every time. Although he doesn't use bandwidth to 'advertise' here, he is listed as a resource on the Elecraft web site (www.elecraft.com) and you'll find his service mentioned in most of the Elecraft manuals. Also there is a list of builders on the Elecraft web site for those who would love to have an Elecraft rig but who can no longer build for some reason or for those who simply enjoy operating, not building but who want the superb Elecraft engineering on their operating desks. There's a wealth of builder support information and services to be found on the Elecraft site if one digs around a bit. I bought an early K2 (SN567) on ebay and had the rig and the required parts
drop shipped to Alan to do the upgrade to Rev B. His workmanship was tops and his price was very modest as I remember it. I recommend him without hesitation. I have had Alan build the amp for one of my K2s, Also had him upgrade them
all. A real professional job. He seems to thrive, a calling, or hobby, on building and upgrade them. The unit already has 160, the noise blanker, the antenna tuner. I have the battery option also. I'm not in the buy the latest and greatest pocket-book mode...but would like to get the old 633 s/n a but more up to date. Take some RG-8 and strip the outer cove and slide the braid off. Bunch it a little so it is not too thin. I recently upgraded K2 #402. It originally had the KAT2, KSB2, and KNB2. The original performance was outstanding. I added all possible updates, plus the KDSP2, KAT100, KIO2, and KPA100. The difference on CW isn't noticeable. But some of the upgrades (14 new matched crystals, widening the KSB2 passband, etc) did make great improvements in SSB so that it is now a great SSB rig also. If you are happy with the performance of the rig in CW, like I was, don't change a thing. It turns out that when the K2 first came out, it was a great CW rig to begin with. Don't forget to consider de-soldering braid. It is not nearly as big as the
braid from large coax but it is handy. It comes on spools and is easy to find at RS or in an internet catalog for soldering supplies.
