I recently had a lightning strike near the house, which entered on the cable line. Immediately afterword the cable modem was smoking (and hot to the touch!), and my wireless access point (WAP) was dead. Unfortunately, my PC connected to the WAP, also was dead, and my P3 and K3 connected also have problems.
I've already ordered the P3 i/o board that just arrived. Thought the K3 i/o was working, since my logging program had no difficulty getting info from the K3 (when connected directly). I guess I foolishly decided to upgrade the K3 with the firmware released yesterday. Things went OK initially but K3 utility hangs after 30 seconds or so (it is able to interrogate the K3 for version number). I've ordered the replacement K3 serial i/o board, but would love to get the K3 out of the update mode for the weekend (that is, now every time I turn the K3 on it is wanting an MCU load). Anyone have an idea about how to return the K3 to regular service (which is seemed to be doing prior to the upload) while I wait for the i/o board? 73, Tom W4KX ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Try the following from page 45 of the manual: Forcing a Firmware Download If you accidentally load an old or incompatible firmware version and find the K3 unresponsive, do the following: (1) unplug the K3 from the power supply and wait 5 seconds; (2) plug the power supply back in; (3) hold the K3’s POWER switch in; after about 10 seconds, you’ll see the TX LED flash (you’ll also see MCU LD on the LCD); (4) load the correct firmware version. If that doesn't work, you may have to wait until the KIO3 board is replaced. 73 & GL! Bill |
The instructions are also in the K3 Utility help file, and I suspect may be newer. It
is recommended that the power off be at least 30 seconds, and if that doesn't work, longer. 73, Mike NF4L On 7/7/2011 1:33 PM, Bill W4ZV wrote: > Tom Doligalski-2 wrote: >> I've ordered the replacement K3 serial i/o board, but would love to get >> the K3 out of the update mode for the weekend (that is, now every time I >> turn the K3 on it is wanting an MCU load). >> >> Anyone have an idea about how to return the K3 to regular service (which >> is seemed to be doing prior to the upload) while I wait for the i/o board? >> >> > Try the following from page 45 of the manual: > > Forcing a Firmware Download > If you accidentally load an old or incompatible > firmware version and find the K3 unresponsive, do > the following: (1) unplug the K3 from the power > supply and wait 5 seconds; (2) plug the power > supply back in; (3) hold the K3’s POWER switch > in; after about 10 seconds, you’ll see the TX LED > flash (you’ll also see MCU LD on the LCD); (4) > load the correct firmware version. > > If that doesn't work, you may have to wait until the KIO3 board is replaced. > > 73& GL! > > Bill > > > -- > View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Lightning-Strike-tp6558962p6559247.html > Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Simple power off from the power button is not sufficient. Follow ALL
the instructions - remove the power plug from the K3 and let all the electrons drain from the electrolytic capacitors, then restore power and power on. When it comes alive, it should blink the LED and should be ready to receive a firmware load. Send ALL firmware to the K3, and in most cases, all will be well. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/7/2011 7:19 PM, Mike wrote: > The instructions are also in the K3 Utility help file, and I suspect may be newer. For those of you who are non-believers in the power of a lightning strike, check these photos: Photo slide show
I had EXACTLY the same thing happen in 2007 when lightning struck a tree in my back yard and coupled to a cable TV line that crossed over the tree's roots. I lost everything in the shack and was lucky the house didn't burn down, as it was filled with smoke. Fortunately insurance covered everything and I eventually replaced the Icom rigs with a K3/P3 combination. Now, everything is disconnected outside the house when I'm not on the air. 73 de Andy, KD3RF / VE2DXY W4KX said: "I recently had a lightning strike near the house, which entered on the cable line. And if it doesn't work the first time, try a few more times.

During tstm season when I'm not using the K3 everything gets
disconnected, including power cord, key and headphones. Same goes for the PC. Yes, it is a PITA but I'm so used to it at this point that I can plug everything back in with my eyes closed. 73, Drew AF2Z On Thu, 07 Jul 2011 18:11:07 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: >For those of you who are non-believers in the power of a lightning strike, >check these photos: >http://s993.photobucket.com/albums/af58/andyvavra/Lightning/ Photo slide >show > >I had */EXACTLY/* the same thing happen in 2007 when lightning struck a tree >in my back yard and coupled to a cable TC line that crossed over the tree's >roots. > >I lost everything in the shack and was lucky the house didn't burn down, as >it was filled with smoke.
