I run one such system on a historical Mac with some very old software.
My BBS runs on a PowerMac 7400 with MacOs 7.61 and Telefinder as the BBS
software.
I am a subscriber to all mailing lists that I am interested in
professionally. I subscribe each list from a different mail address. To
post mailing lists to echo conference areas I run a special utility that
converts e-mail sent to specific mail addresses to the BBS forums. That way
I can keep track of more than 230 separate lists that I subscribe to. The
BBS software handles all the deleting in accordance with the message limits
I have defined for each list.
To run my own mailing lists I use Macjordomo and a SIMS/Communigator as an
SMTP server, running on a PowerMac 7200. Naturally, there is a
corresponding mail address on my BBS that is subscribed to each of mailing
lists. That way, message archives of my lists are created automatically.
I know there are BBS proframs for WinTel machines that do exactly the same
things but I cannot remember their names, since I have been a Mac only
person for the last 18 years (I bought my first ever WinTel laptop this
year so that I can run Ham SW to use with my K2).
If you are interested you can have a read-only access to my BBS with the
user ID Guest and password Guest. You can access it in several ways: 1. By
using its custom client software, which you can download from my site. 2.
By Telnet'ting it on port 1474 or 3. Via its web interface (I do not
remember the exact address and my system seems to be down at this moment)
The address to my server is at my signature.
Greetings from Istanbul, Turkey
