Hi all,
Since this summer I am a proud owner of K3-10/F and don't want to waste bandwidth on my compliments to this great radio. I guess that I have a problem with loose buttons in upper right corner of the front board. For example, if I press M>V button, other surrounding buttons are also moving. Is this normal behavior? If not, how to solve this? I didn't find any post that describes this kind of problem. OTOH, on YouTube I found a couple of blurry demonstration videos and I thought I saw that those buttons are not moving. Thanks, Dragan, 4O4A K3-10/F #5569 |
Dragan,
The other buttons do not move. I suspect that the rubber spacer pad between the front panel board and the 2D connector on the upper right corner of the K3 is not in place. You can see the 2D connector if you open the top cover and look - the spacer pad should also be seen on the front panel board. One of the problems with those pads is that often the "sticky substance" peels off onto the backing paper instead of sticking to the pad. If that happens, the pad will stick for a short wile because of some residual "sticky stuff", but it will eventually come loose. If you find the pad loose in your K3, you can re-apply it with most any kind of flexible glue that will adhere to rubber, like a product called "Goop". 73, Don W3FPR On 11/4/2011 3:15 PM, Dragan 4O4A wrote: > Hi all, > > Since this summer I am a proud owner of K3-10/F and don't want to waste > bandwidth on my compliments to this great radio. > > I guess that I have a problem with loose buttons in upper right corner of > the front board. > For example, if I press M>V button, other surrounding buttons are also > moving. Hi Don,
Thanks for prompt answer. Please take a look at image here: http://www.desniklik.com/k3-4o4a.jpg Is "A" a 2D connector you are referring in your message? (sorry, I can't find proper English word for the "A") There is some gap between PCB and "A", as tick as PCB is. PCB is moving when I press button. What do you think about gluing some non-conductive piece of material (another rubber) on the side of "A", to fill the gap? |
Dragan,
Yes, putting some non-conductive material about the thickness of a PC board is the solution. Use some glue between whatever you material you use and the Front Panel board. The material should ideally have some flexibility - like rubber or nylon, but a stiff material (like a small square cut from PC board backing) will work too. Nothing fancy, but it does need to be present to keep the buttons from moving inward when they are not pressed. Yes, your label 'A' points to a 2D connector. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/4/2011 4:15 PM, Dragan 4O4A wrote: > Hi Don, > > Thanks for prompt answer. > > Please take a look at image here: http://www.desniklik.com/k3-4o4a.jpg > > Is "A" a 2D connector you are referring in your message? > (sorry, I can't find proper English word for the "A") > > There is some gap between PCB and "A", as tick as PCB is. > PCB is moving when I press button. > > What do you think about gluing some non-conductive piece of material > (another rubber) on the side of "A", to fill the gap? > > > > > On 4.11.2011 20:34, Don Wilhelm-4 [via Elecraft] wrote: >> Dragan, >> >> The other buttons do not move. >> >> I suspect that the rubber spacer pad between the front panel board and >> the 2D connector on the upper right corner of the K3 is not in place. >> You can see the 2D connector if you open the top cover and look - the >> spacer pad should also be seen on the front panel board. >> >> One of the problems with those pads is that often the "sticky substance" >> peels off onto the backing paper instead of sticking to the pad. Don at all,
Thanks for help. I fixed it by placing a small piece (6x6 millimeter) rubber, about 3mm thick. It's stiff enough to prevent movement of PCB. Now, feeling is much better. BTW, I don't have a problem with this "rubber buttons feeling". Get used to it during Spectrum 48K time :)) 73, tnx Dragan, 4O4A |
