Loud audio blast on power up

Mike Scott-7
Something seems to have crept into the last firmware build that I don't
remember hearing before.
When I turn the rig on there is a momentary loud blast from the speakers. It
lasts maybe 250 milliseconds and then everything is normal. I get the
phenomena when in CW, data, SSB modes. I do not see it show up in AM.

When I watch the filter display on the K3 front panel the bandwidth seems to
change in concert with the sound blast. For example if I am running SSB with
normalized bandwidth the K3 powers up with the filter narrower and then
shortly thereafter widens.

I am running MCU 2.63 and DSP 01.95.

Mike -

I have a similar phenomenon, but it's a "soft blast", a burst of low audio
as the radio turns on, followed by normal operation.  Last 2 firmware loads
exhibit this.

I had a loud blast once before.  Try reloading all the software and data
tables, that fixed it for me.

I had this problem long ago; a reload of the firmware AND the data tables cured it.  The trick was the data tables.  Thanks to Gary at Elecraft.

Shep, sorry for the late reply; I've been traveling.

In the K3 Utility under View, check Advanced Mode.  This will display a check box labeled *Always load DSP data tables*.  Also, be sure to check all the appropriate boxes for loading the Firmware modules.

This is the solution Gary provided back in March.  Hopefully, it will work for your problem now.

You can also load data tables (along with all the other firmware, a complete
refresh) by clicking "Send All Firmware to K3" on the Firmware tab without
checking Advanced Mode.  Advanced Mode has too many choices!

RE: Loud audio blast on power up

John E. Reiser
I noticed recently that on power up my K3 makes a noise for a fraction of a
second.  It sounds like background atmospheric noise as it would sound with
the SSB filter active, even though the radio was last powered off with a CW
filter set.  I don't remember exactly when this behavior began, but it seems
that it was in the last few beta firmware releases.  In every other respect
my K3 behaves normally.

Obviously, this is no big deal.  However, I did try reloading the latest
beta version, as suggested on this reflector.  I always use "Send All
Firmware to K3", which reloads the data tables.  It didn't help.

Could it be that recent firmware versions impose a slight delay before the
filter selection stored on power down is implemented on power up?

Re: Loud audio blast on power up

Hello John,

it is tested here in OK-land (not on mine unit but on friendĀ“s one)
that if you can cure there is need to send only "DSP1" plus "DSP data
tables" again. No full package again, only DSP and tables. So uncheck
the rest of modules in K3 Utility and go....

You will see result, here it was solution.

Let us know...

K3: 1. Loud audio blast on power up 2. Main/SUB balance

Enno, PF5X
Hi,

Just loaded F/W 2.72/1.98 with the "Send all firmware" option (so including data tables). The short audio blast is still there if you are tuned to a signal when switching on the K3. It really hurts your ears as it seems that for this short period the AGC is not yet ON.

Any fixes planned for this (change boot order in DSP such that AGC assumes a signal being present until the RX really starts to receive) ??

BTW. The updated action of LINE OUT=NOR now with outputting monitor audio during TX is great.

I have the set the CONFIG:SUB AF to BALANCE. When looking to the monitor VU meters on the microKEYER router software it appears that the SUB output is lower than the MAIN output with the balance knob in the 12 o'clock position (after equalizing both main and sub with double tapping A>B). This is effect is also audible (~6dB difference).

Any cure for that ??

I recorded the 160M CW contest this weekend using the LINE OUT=phone
or speaker option.  I also noticed the short burst when the radio was
turned on.

Yes, this should make recording a lot easier, thanks!

What I noticed, but didn't investigate, was that there was a DC
offset in the SUB audio output.  I was using Audacity to record the
audio.  Using the LINE OUT to a line in on my computer.  I noticed
that monitoring the sidetone showed close to a zero (if not zero) DC
offset for the left channel or the MAIN Rx.  The right channel
however showed a substantial DC offset.  I haven't played with the
new Beta yet, nor have I looked closely at the recording.

I thought I was just getting a low-level spurt of audio, but if there is a
signal on the frequency, it is a loud blast as Enno describes.
