Low Audio

Anndel
Aloha Everyone,  does anyone have the same problem with low audio on your K3
from both my speaker and headphone?  I have the audio configuration set on
HI but it's not helping much.  I'm using a AKG K240 Studio Monitor for
headphones and an Icom SP-20 which is soon to be swapped out with a Sweet
Sounds speaker.

Thanks and 73,

My headphone output is OK (AF gain at 9 o'clock), but my speaker output has
always been low (sometimes requiring full AF gain) regardless of config
setting or internal/external speaker.
Others tell me it's 'normal', but I don't believe that for a minute.
I've learned to live with it, but I don't like it.

Re: K3 low audio

Jim Sheldon
I think it varies a small amount from radio to radio, but I solved my problem by getting a pair of RF suppressed, amplified speakers called COMspkr from West Mountain Radio (the RigBlaster people).  They were designed to work with a computer sound card speaker out and since they have the 1/8" stereo plug on the cable, they work perfectly with the speaker out on the K3.  Nice thing, if you have the sub receiver installed you can have main RX in one and SUB RX in the other one.  They sit on a shelf right above the KPA500 and no RF gets into them at all.  I can actually get enough undistorted audio out of them to rattle the windows so they solved my problem.  I AM hard of hearing so wasn't really complaining about the K3 having low audio, all current rigs tend to have low sounding audio to me.

I have ear-splitting volume from a pair of non-amplified speakers from Tivoli Audio (bought for a reasonable price from their outlet store when it was open). The audio amplifier chip is a 3 watt device so it should be plenty loud. I once tried a Kenwood SP-930 and that was loud also.

Ralph,

The K2 was designed for low receive current consumption, and as a result
the audio power had to be limited.  With the K2, that was a common
complaint, particularly for hams with hearing loss (me included).

Not so with the K3 which has a 3 watt audio amplifier.  Either you are
using inefficient speakers or you have something wrong there.  Do you
have a mono plug in the rear speaker jack?  It must be a stereo plug (a
stereo to mono adapter will not do, it still shorts out one channel).
If you have a stereo plug, do you have it wired correctly?  For a single
speaker, it must connect to the tip and the shell.  If you are using 2
speakers, one connects to the tip (left) and shell and the right one
connects to the ring and shell.
If you are using 2 speakers and are listening to the same signal on
both, are the speakers phased correctly? (try reversing the connection
to one speaker) - that would be more apparent when the speakers are
moved closer together.  Out of phase speakers produce acoustical
cancellation and will give the appearance of low audio when in fact the
level can be quite high.

Other than a fault with the K3, that is all the "dumb" things I can
think of right now.
