Is there such a command. I had this radio for about a year and I have to keep turning the knob to go from 100 watts to five watts. I don't recall in my book a cmd for it but was wondering if there was a firmware upgrade. I use my amp every day and before I use it, I always go to five watts on the radio, tune the antenna and then go back to high power to push the amp. I have to keep turning the knob and it's a pain. At the rate I'm going, this radio will have to sent back to Elecraft for a new knob/tumbler. This could get expensive. Is there something on the number panel to get this command up? It takes a bunch of turns to go from high to low power.

These are good candidates for macros. T5W, T100W maybe?

This might work for you: You can set the TUNE function to always work at a
separate fixed power level (I use 8 watts) that is not dependent on what power level you have dialed in for normal ops. Configuration Menu: TUN PWR Page 60 in my user manual. This is perfect to let my antenna coupler tune when I change bands. No knob turning. On Wed, Dec 23, 2009 at 4:25 PM, -.-. --.-N3TU -.-. --.- < [hidden email]> wrote: > > Is there such a command. As they say in one of the adverts for pasta sauce "Its already in there".
Check out the K3 menu CONFIG: TUN PWR. It will set the TUNE power to whatever level you select without regard to the power level set on the knob - if it is set to NOR (which it likely is now) the TUNE power will follow the power knob. 73, Don W3FPR -.-. --.-N3TU -.-. --.- wrote: > Is there such a command. The TUN PWR is not working. I went into CONF and changed it to 8.0 and the power on 100 watts. I turned off the radio and when I hit the tune it was reading 40 watts on AM. I tried it a few times and could not get it to work.
Now about the tune button. I always use the tune button when I am checking the external antenna tuner on 5 watts. Once I get a 1.1 swr, then I turn up the power to 100 watts and hit tune again. I was hoping there would be a button for high/low power in the firmware. Now if it is supposed to default on 8.0 watts once I set it (once I get it working) , then I still have to turn up the power to 100 watts with the knob and key on cw to tune the amp. I need a quick tune button. 5 watts for antenna tune and 100 watts to push the amp with the amp already preset. <quote author="Don Wilhelm-4"> As they say in one of the adverts for pasta sauce "Its already in there". Did you HOLD the TUNE button? A 40 to 50 watt carrier should result if
you instead tapped the button - that is XMIT, and it places the K3 into transmit mode which in AM would result in a constant carrier. 73, Don W3FPR -.-. --.-N3TU -.-. --.- wrote: > The TUN PWR is not working. Hi Greg,
From what you describe (below), either your K3 is malfunctioning or you're not pushing the correct TUNE button (XMIT/TUNE vs. ATU TUNE). If you set CONFIG TUN PWR to 08.0 and _hold_ the XMIT/TUNE button, the K3 should switch to CW mode and output a carrier at a RF level of 8 Watts. _Tapping_ the XMIT/TUNE button will return the K3 to its previous mode and power output setting. For example, if you are operating LSB with a power settings of 100 watts, press and _hold_ the XMIT/TUNE button and the K3 will change from LSB to CW mode, with a keyed carrier of 8 watts. Tap XMIT/TUNE to exit the TUNE mode and the K3 will return to LSB mode and the power will be set to its previous value of 100 watts. If your K3 is not working as I have described then you may want to contact [hidden email] for help correcting the problem. I guess the responses saying to set up the TUNE power level are
appropriate for your use. I've also wanted this command but for different reasons and when the ability to use macros was expanded a couple months ago, I added a QRP (5 W) and a QRO (100 W) macro. One goes to M3 (tap) and the other to M3 (hold). This is pretty useful since I do a lot of switching between "regular" and QRP ops. I think the commands are PC005; and PC100; Use the K3 Utility to create them and send them to the K3, then use the K3's CONFIG:MACRO# function to assign them to keys. 73--Nick, WA5BDU ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

TUN PWR is a different feature for probably a different audience. I got taught in my club to never ever use a "sticking" tune button, but instead generate the tuning RF with the foot switch for PTT, and the CW hand key for the signal. This is so that if anything really bad happens, letting go either the foot switch or the hand key will immediately establish "safe state" - ie. turn off RF (and save either equipment, or if something *really* went wrong, someones life). The TUNE button does not provide this functionality, hence we wont use it for tuning, hence TUN PWR doesnt help, thus being forced to use this 0.1W step is one of the annoyances with the K3. I can see the utility of the 0.1W step for QRP operators, I would submit that this could still be the setting for the PA not installed or deactivated. With the PA installed and enabled, 1W would be preferable. In cases where someone really needs to switch often, PA enabled/disabled could be a macro key.
