I have done the open the transmit frequency software update. The radio will work on all freqs outside the Ham bands EXCEPT between 7.55Mhz and 8.99Mhz. Tried to check in to the SHARES net for the first time with my new K3 on freq aprox 7.6Mhz and got the BND END message.
Any other MARS operators can confirm same issue or is it unique to my rig? I have a call into Elecraft, but thought I would try here in the meantime. Tnx, Jack W4GRJ / AFA4DG |
This blocked tx freq. range is normal. 8 MHz is used for the IF, so transmitting there'abouts would probably not be a good idea for the K3.
It's written down somewhere, I just can't recall where... 73, 4Z5TO

Yes you are correct, just got off the phone with Elecraft ...it is due to the IF at approx 8.2Mhz.
This is a big deal to me as a MARS/SHARES operator. Waiting to hear back from Elecraft to see if they can move the freq up a bit to xmit in this area. Otherwise, I will have to put my TS-480 back on the air...glad I caught this before selling the TS-480.

Correction to my poor grammer, should have said ".....Waiting to hear back from Elecraft to see if they can move the lower limit freq up a bit to xmit in the 7.6Mhz area"

Jack,
Transmitting between 7.5 and 9 MHz is not permitted because we have to enforce a minimum frequency distance from the 8.2 MHz IF (and its associated IF rejection trap on the KANT3 or KAT3 module). An excluded first IF region is a fundamental limitation of a down-conversion design. The TS-480 can transmit in this range because it uses up- conversion; we used down-conversion to provide much better receive performance and allow for narrow crystal filters. The only way around it would be to use an external transverter. I can give you details if you're interested. The K3 will work well on all other MARS frequencies within its tuning range. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 23, 2009, at 1:07 PM, W4GRJ wrote: > > Yes you are correct, just got off the phone with Elecraft ...it is > due to the > IF at approx 8.2Mhz. > This is a big deal to me as a MARS/SHARES operator. Ah, I'm reading my email backwards again :) We might be able to allow
you to go to 7.6 MHz. I have to test this. tnx Wayne N6KR On Dec 23, 2009, at 1:26 PM, W4GRJ wrote: > > Correction to my poor grammer, should have said ".....Waiting to > hear back > from Elecraft to see if they can move the lower limit freq up a bit > to xmit > in the 7.6Mhz area" > > > W4GRJ wrote: >> >> Yes you are correct, just got off the phone with Elecraft ...it is >> due to >> the IF at approx 8.2Mhz. >> This is a big deal to me as a MARS/SHARES operator. It's one of the reasons I haven't parted with my TR-7. The other reason -- I like the radio :-)
