I had a buddy who was an Army MIO back in the cold war days. When he got out I said, hey, why don't you get your ham license? He said he couldn't copy code until he read what he had typed. They type each letter as they hear it without actually thinking about it. Which makes sense when you are listening to foreign languages. In his case he was stationed in Alaska, so I'm sure he can "type" the extra characters in the Cyrillic alphabet :-)
