Making K3 RX audio like K2

NZ0T
I like the sound of the RX audio of my K2 with the KAF2 filter better than my K3.  It has less hiss and just sounds better - at least to my crummy ears..  I have played around some with the RX equalizer in the K3 and have improved it some but has anyone had time to really find out what settings will best mirror the K2 with the KAF2?

Thanks and 73,

Bill NZ0T

The K3 is a very different radio than the K2, and some of this will be
reflected in a different character in its sound.

The KAF2 uses analog filters with feedback to provide narrower
bandwidths, and includes an L/C low pass filter to suppress hiss and
other high-frequency noises.

In general, the K3 DSP filters are sharper than those of the K2 w/KAF2.
One way to get some of the feel might be to use the PB feature in CW
mode.  This lets you adjust a wider, underlying filter which may restore
a little of the audio you've become accustomed to in the K2.

If you have exceptional high frequency hearing, you might want to
consider headphones (or speakers/amplified speakers) with some high
frequency roll off.

Activation of NR with a setting of F1-1 or F1-2 may also help tailor the
sound a bit more to that of the K2.

In the end, though, the K3 has its own unique characteristics.  I hope
you grow to enjoy them as much as you do those of your venerable K2 /KAF2.

I meant PB2.

Also, be sure to try AFX with stereo headphones.  DLY 3 to DLY 5 can
make a real difference in the "presence" of a signal.

Enjoy!

Thanks Lyle, I had not thought of changing the delay on afx which I use all the time.  I wear hearing aids which may be part of my problem though I take them off when using headphones.  I'll try PB2 in CW and see how that works.  Don't get me wrong - the audio od the K3 is excellent just different than my K2.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has been disappointed in the "sound" of
the K3.  Coming from a Yaesu FT990 with a Heil Clear Speech speaker, the
sound was smoother and less fatiguing.  Moving the shift to a value of FC=
1.2 or so might help.  I'm also hoping that more work will be done on the
Noise Reduction.  In each of the four groups of NR the 1 and 2 settings just
seem to lower the signal and noise together while settings 3 and 4 do a much
better job of reducing noise but with an adverse effect of a tunnel and echo
sound.  Is it just my radio or do others have the same problem?

Bill ....

I tend to agree - the K2 with the K2DSP does sound better on CW with the
DSP / NR turned on than the K3 with NR turned on.  At least to my old ears.

On the K3, with NR off   AGC SLP = 12   AGC THR = 5, it sounds pretty
close to my K2 with no DSP / NR.  ( My CONFIG & MENU settings are
on http://k8dd.com/k3/K3_Settings11-03-08.xls ).

I have recorded both with Audacity.  Without DSP both the K2 and K3 have
great sounding audio.  When you turn on the K2 DSP the signal may sound
a bit hollow, but the waveform of the CW is not destroyed.

With the K3's NR turned on with any of the levels set the leading edge of
the
CW signal starts to flatten out or go soft and destroy the CW waveform - the
leading edge goes anywhere from looking like a .45 bullet to a 30-06!

It does, however bring the signal up out of the noise, but at higher speeds
it
makes it hard to copy.

I recorded a CW contest in the spring and sent sound clips to some friends
and some QRP ops that I worked - one comment was "I've got to check my
rig - that keying sounds really soft."  It wasn't their keying - with the NR
off
they sounded fine.

The end result is -- I don't use NR or RX EQ.  As has been stated, RX EQ
on CW causes very low audio when the bandwidth is 200 Hz or below.

I have not tried the MCU and DSP that came with the K3, but I do not
remember that NR altered the received CW waveform like it does now.

And I have no idea what NR does to signals on SSB ....That's my story and
I'm sticking to it
