Menus went away

Kenneth E. Harker
I was thinking of getting the K60XV to add to my K2/100+KAT100, so
I was going through the online checklist to see what I needed to get, as
I have some of the required options (like the KPA100MODKT and KPA100SHLDKT)
already installed, but I don't know what versions of the various firmware
components I might need to upgrade...

Well, I now seem to have no menus.  I push the menu button and it does
nothing.  Push and hold the menu button and it does nothing.  Everything else
about the radio seems to work fine.  I haven't actually turned on the radio
in a month or maybe more, so I can't say when this actually happened.
I can tell from power-up that I have CPU firmware 2.04A and IOC firmware
1.07.

Has anyone else seen this before?  Did that actual switch just fail on
me?  Is there a way to check that without desoldering it?

I had a similar problem.  In my case it was caused by plugging in the
DSP module without the daughterboard that has the SMT parts on it.
Somehow this confused the firmware.

Another thing to check is that your KAT100 is powered up along with or
before the K2.  I had some strange problems when I had the KAT100
connected to the K2 but not powered up.

Kenneth,

You can remove the front panel and check the switch from the back side by
checking for open and closed resistances.  Compare to another switch you
know to be working - the contact layout for all switches are the same - they
are all DPST, so be certain to check both sides even though only one side is
used.  Check the soldering on that switch first though - a solder joint
failure is more likely than a switch failure.

After some investigation, it turns out that I had inadvertently plugged
a mono cable (instead of a stereo cable/plug) into the keying jack on the
back of the rig.  Unplugging the cable brought all the menus back.

KPA100 over current on 160m

Bob Henderson
I like to keep my K2 S/N 997 up to date.  I fitted a KPA100 two years
ago and routinely apply other enhancements as they arise.  Whilst at
Dayton this year I bought the components to increase the tolerance of
the KPA100 to hi SWR.  I have just completed fitting the modkit and have
replaced the firmware with 1.09.  Having done so, I decided to check the
power output of the K2/KPA100 against DC current input accross all
bands.  As I expected, there is a variation of DC current input and RF
output.  However, from 80m thru 10m old 997 produces 90-110W at
nominally 20 Amps.  The big shock is that on 160m it produces 110W but
draws a huge 30 Amps from the DC supply.  Concerned that I might have a
problem with the LPF for 160m, I terminated the KPA100 LPFs in 50ohms
and used my MFJ antenna analyser to check the SWR of the filter.  On
160m it is around 1.2:1.  The filters for other bands are all 1.3:1 or
less.  It doesn't seem like the problem is the LPF.  I wonder if any
other KPA100 owners might have seen this problem or have a clue to its
cause?

K2 - No Display troubleshooting

Philippe-35
In reply to this post by Bob Henderson
Hello All,

I did the first part of the mounting and I'm at the stage of Alignment
and Test, Part I and yes, I'm almready stuck :-)

Turn on the K2, I ear the relays moving but nothing on the LCD. I did
all the checks according to the troubleshooting guide and as I did not
find anything wrong I came back to the Front Panel resistance checks.

All values are in range except for U1 pin1 where I find more than 1Mohm
instead of a value between 25-35K as stated in the check list.

I checked U1 for bad solder or bad pin insertion but it seems Ok on this
side also.

If someone can point me somewhere I can find help or a way to go
further...

Philippe

PS : I ckecked according to the troubleshooting guide that :

000 = OK
050 = OK
060 = OK
075 = OK (i do not ear the 4Mhz oscillator but hecked with a scope and I
have an oscillation there)

Re: K2 - No Display troubleshooting

G3VVT
Philippe,

Check that you have soldered all the pins for the socket of U1, the  LCD
driver on the Front Panel Board. I missed soldering pin #1 on this and  the
result was no display also.

A real problem to cure that mistake!

Another item to check could be the LCD display itself. Mine was too short  in
the device pins so had to solder on the top side (front) of the board as
noted in the K2 manual. There is a chance that the LCD display soldering will be
ineffective if soldered on the underside.

No doubt other suggestions will come your way on what to check.

Regards,
Bob, G3VVT

Phillipe,

I had a similar problem, and found that I had removed the polarizing filter
from the LCD thinking that it was protective film!  The hint to this is that
when you switch on and look very carefully, you will see very faint
characters on the LCD module.

RE: K2 - No Display troubleshooting

Philippe-35
Hi Kevin,

I solved my problem with the precious help of Gary from Elecrat and Bob,
G3VVT  who had a similar problem and we sloved it the same way :-)

I forgot to solder pin 1 on U1. The best way should be to desolder the 6
front LCD pins, move the LCD gently to the back and desolder the 4 LCD
backlight pins.

I was afraid to break something so I decided to cut the corner of U1
support to have access to Pin 1. Then I soldered it from the upper side.

And it works since yesterday night where I did the firts tests that are
all Ok.

I'm going on Part II now :-)

Thanks everyone for your help,

Best 73,
Philippe
