Modern battery for K2

PHILIP GRAITCER
Here is a nice little primer I have found on LiPO batteries. There are not the safer LiFePO4 batteries, however.

http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-lipo-batteries.html

I am still wondering if anyone has a part number of a nice Li battery of any chemistry that fits into the K2 battery space. Most of the batteries I have found are too large. There are tons of satisfactory batteries that I can use external to the K2, but I prefer a self contained rig.

Thanks,
Phil, W3HZZ

Look for "A123 ANR26650M1A" at eBay.
Each cell: 3.3 volts, 2300 mAh, diameter 26 mm, lenght 66 mm
You need 4 of it and a balacer 4S1.

Take a look at batteries intended for the RC crowd.  Excellent prices
and chargers available as well. LiIon and LiFePo4 available in many cell
combinations and sizes. One place to look is www.hobbyking.com.  No
connection to them, just a good place to by stuff if you can wait for
shipping.  They do have many batteries in the US warehouse though.

Re: Modern battery for K2

Deni F5VJC
HI I have just acquired a Super Polymer Lithium Ion battery from an Ebay
seller, it's part no. is DC 1298A, (12V 9.8Ah)
Also received a small charger with this battery for 120-240 Vac. The
physical size seems like it will easily fit inside my K2 with room to
spare. Is this battery safe to fit internally in my K2 and recharge using
the supplied external charger?
Any advice appreciated, I have no experience of these batteries.

Sounds good, because the text for the "blue" batteries at ebay says: "With its
multi-protective device, the inner circuit prevents the box from over-recharging or
over-discharging." So the balancer is already included in the packet and the packet should
be save. Merci for the tip.

I wonder what resulted from this. I looked at it also and found that although this high-capacity battery probably fits physically, it may not be a good idea to put it inside the K2 due to the power switch and the indicator LED. See image at e.g Aliexpress.com.

If fitted inside the K2, the switch must be on and then the indicator will discharge the battery - unless someone has found a way to disable the LED without damaging the battery.

As an external battery, it would be excellent though, as far as I can tell.

Re: Modern battery for K2

Deni F5VJC
Hi Sverre, I am still using this battery external to the K2. It is very convenient as it just sits under the rig and easily connects to the K2 power jack with the attached cable provided, no mods required. Yes the switch needs to be ON both for charging and when in use as a supply for the K2, and yes the LED is ON in this state so will no doubt in time discharge the battery. As it seems very convenient like this I decided to leave the battery external. I have now purchesed another Na I find them to be excellent and much better than the heavier limited Ah SLA batteries.

Sverre Holm (LA3ZA)
Thanks Deni,

I listed your LiPo battery as an alternative on the "LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to Elecraft K2 Modifications" under the KBT2 (scroll down a page or two)
