Monitor (OT)

David Christ
The CRT on my shack computer is dying and I am in the market for a
new 23-24" flat screen.  However there is very little (read none)
information relative to RFI.  I have heard anecdotal stories that LG
is good and Samsung is RFI susceptible.  But they are pure hearsay.

I would appreciate any information about or experience with which
monitors work well in a hamshack environment.

If you don't want to take up reflector bandwidth, reply direct.  I
will summarize if necessary.

Using an ASUS from Newegg with absolutely no problems. I think the model is
VH238 or 238H, manufactured Dec 2010.

I think your information is incorrect? I use a Samsung SyncMaster 932BW
(24") with the left edge of it sitting four inches from my Alpha 9500 amp
that I certainly do run at the full 1500 watts output during contest. I have
run Acer 15" and NEC 17" and Samsung 27" sitting next to my amp and have
never had any indication whatsoever of RFI issues. I do have all of my
equipment (including PC) bonded to a rather complete ground system that is
tied into my tower ground system and my AC power system.

Just because one Samsung model doesn't have a problem doesn't mean
that all Samsungs are OK!

I bought a LCD monitor from Costco a couple of years ago - I'm fairly
sure it was a Samsung. It didn't have real buttons, but some sort of
touch-sensitive mechanism. Unfortunately it also turned out to be
RF-sensitive, and would turn the monitor off, or bring up the config
menu, etc., when I transmitted on certain frequencies. I returned it,
and bought a Viewsonic, which has real buttons, and have had no
problems with that one.

YMMV, of course....

Re: Monitor (OT)

John Lemay
I think it's more important to consider the proximity of the monitor to the
aerial, rather than the amplifier. With a bit of luck, it's the aerial doing
the transmitting and receiving, not the amplifier. This brings several
variables into the equation, such as aerial gain and direction (if any),
height and distance from the shack. Add to that short list; power levels,
receive sensitivity, frequency in use and background noise levels ....

These variables will no doubt ensure a host of different answers for similar
monitors !

Proximity to your AMP does not matter unless your amp is an un-shielded
piece of trash, which I doubt,. What matters is proximity to your ANTENNAS!

The only RFI issues I've seen from video monitors of any sort are RF
trash that THEY generate.  A couple of years ago, I bought a cheapie for
my shack that was VERY noisy. I killed it with a multi-turn ferrite
choke on the power cable.

Yes, this has been reported on here before. I had the same symptoms
with my Samsung XL2370 but my older 2333 with hardware buttons works
fine with no problems. Another ham, a VK if I recall, had a
soft-button Samsung and fixed the rf sensitivity with a clever trick:
He stuck copper foil over the soft buttons and grounded it with a
short strap.

Re: Monitor (OT)

In reply to this post by John Lemay
I'm not selling anything and I'm not buying anything! A question was asked
about a monitor, which happened to be a Samsung, and I was only providing a
firsthand experience that none of my Samsung monitors, or any other brand of
monitor that I have used at my station,  have had the problems mentioned by
the email originator. Of course if one does not put their station together
in a manner that minimizes RFI, it possible that NO monitor could withstand
that environment.

Re: Monitor (OT)

David Christ
In reply to this post by David Christ
I have received enough replies to report the trend.  With one
exception no problems were reported.  The list of brands was most of
the mid to major names such as Dell, LG, HP, Acer, ViewSonic, Planar,
ASUS.

The exceptions were Samsung.  Not all Samsung monitors were reported
as problematic.  Many were OK.  An older one had display problems
when the user was on 80.  This may or may not have been the result of
RF in the shack.  No way to tell.  It seems the one to avoid is
Samsung models with soft of virtual buttons.  These could be
activated during transmission.  Units with real buttons seemed to be
OK.

There are some mystery brands out there that were not mentioned so no
conclusion for them can be drawn.

Bottom line: It appears that if you stick with recognized brands and
avoid trick things like soft buttons you should be OK.  However there
are no guarantees.

Thanks to all,

David  K0LUM

Re: Monitor (OT)

S Sacco
In reply to this post by David Christ
I had a Samsung SyncMaster 24" which was very susceptible to RFI on
80M.  It would turn off whenever I transmitted.  The antenna is an
inverted Vee, less than 1 wavelength from the monitor.  I was able to
stop this problem by wrapping 6 turns of the AC power cable around a
big clamp on ferrite.  (Thank you Jim, K9YC, AGAIN for your work on
this topic!)

Coincidentally, around the same time, the "rfi" mailing list hosted by
eHam/contesting.com discussed a related issue.  Search for "TV turns
on-off when TX" at http://lists.contesting.com/pipermail/rfi/.

My Samsung failed last month, and I chose to replace it with a Dell
U2412M, which does not have the capacitive-touch switches.  I left the
common mode chokes in place, and it's been fine.

FWIW.
