My K3 forgets where it's at on DC failure

Dave Anderson, K4SV
Hi All,

I am back from the TJ9PF DXpedition where I brouhgt my new K3 to use for the 6th
station.  We activated 6 stations for 10 days resulting in over 68,000 QSO's

When working in some countries it is very common to have commercial AC power
cuts randomly.  This was a daily occurring feature of TJ.  The hotel that we
stayed in had a generator, but we were off for several minutes at a time without
AC mains.  So this leads me to some questions relative to my K3 and it's short
term memory.

We worked slit always and when the AC failed the radio would go dark.  When
power returned and the radio restarted it would come back on the same band but
never the same frequency for VFO A or B.  The Split would also be set back to
simplex.  As you might imagine the guy your working now is left hanging
and usually looses his QSO.

Why can not the K3 remember where it is and if it was in split or not?  This is
a rudimentary feature even the lowest cost import radios offer but it seems the
K3 is incapable of retaining where it was.

WHY?

A more important question, WHEN can this defect be fixed?

Hi,

When in split, I can power off via the front panel switch and then
power on and the K3 does NOT remember split although it does remember
the frequency.

So I would like that corrected as well.

FWIW..:-)

Re: K3 delay on power output on SSB

Don Wilhelm-4
  Oms,

What mode?  If this "problem" is in a soundcard driven data mode, be
certain you have enough audio input to the K3 - you need to drive the
ALC indicator up to at least 4 bars and to the point where the 5th bar
has just turned on.  The K3 ALC meter is actually an audio level meter
in the lower part of the scale.  The 5th bar indicates the onset of ALC.

On SSB, turn compression down to 1:1 and increase the mic gain until you
have 5 to 7 bars indicated on the ALC meter, then set the compression as
you desire.

If this problem occurs in CW, then I have no answer, contact K3support
in that case.

My MFJ-4225V power supply sometimes trips off when I'm operating in 160M
contests, giving me the same problem.

If I'm "running" stations (calling CQ), after establishing a frequency
I'll power the K3 off normally, then back on.  Now if the P/S trips the
K3 will come back up on the current frequency.

Re: My K3 forgets where it's at on DC failure

Don Wilhelm-4
  Nick,

A quicker way to accomplish the same thing is to do a band change, then
change back.  The K3 stores the current frequency and mode when the band
is changed.

The K3 does store the current frequency after it has not been changed
for some period of time - I believe that time is 30 seconds.

Re: My K3 forgets where it's at on DC failure

Oliver Dröse
In reply to this post by AC7AC
C'mon guys, I cannot here that "it's like a computer" argument anymore! ALL
modern transceivers nowadays are controlled by microprocessors and ALL get it
right to be on the same QRG after a power failure ... except our beloved K3!

The last used frequency is stored into the EEPROM of the PIC (or probably
external memory, haven't checked the schematics on that) when changing bands so
why not already save it after no move of the VFO knob of say 5 seconds?

The only valid reason not to do so that I could see (it can't be programming as
the function is already there) but still struggle a bit accepting (as others do
get it right) is the "fear" of memory failures within the rig's "lifetime" as
you usually can only write into EEPROM (at least that in today's PIC processors)
for about 1.000.000 times and that's not much depending on usuage scenarios and
storing the frequency e.g. all 5 seconds.

Is that the real reason why not implementing that easy functionality, Wayne?

In reply to this post by w0mu
To solve the shutdown with power failure, I propose using a dual-diode
switch and a battery source of power.  Even a pack of 8 "C" or "D" cells
will keep it alive for receive for long enough to power down the radio.
