My Proposed K3 Configuration so far...

Phil Hystad
K3 experts:

I am working on trying to understand all the features I want in my K3 but so far I have worked up the following configuration of things that I definitely will include:

K3/100
KAT3 -- ATU
KXV3A -- IF output and transverter interface
KDVR3 -- DVR

Question:  do I want the TXCO (KTCXO3-1) module?  I think if I get it my reason would be just that I like to have the best stuff but I am not sure I would really know whether I benefit by it or not.

Question:  do I need the USB interface -- this seems to be more then just a USB interface though, from what I can see, unless I am confused, this also includes audio input/output ports.

And, I am still on the fence regarding the sub-receiver and I will decide on filters later after I decide on the basic components (that is, deciding which CW filters I want).

And, another question:  does the general coverage bandpass module give you anything extra besides access to the other non-ham-band frequencies.  Off hand, I don't that that as necessary since I have other radios capable of pulling in that other stuff if I want and I rarely do that.  Or I should say, I never do that.

phil, K7PEH

My Proposed K3 Configuration so far...

Follow up on my own posting...

I might be confused between a thing called the KIO3 and the KUSB.  I can't find the KIO3 on the list of options but I do read about it in the user's manual.  Is this no longer an option?  Or, am I staring right at it on the web page but still blind and can't see.

The KIO3 is part of the K3, not an option.

The KUSB is a USB <-> RS232 adapter.

Is the KUSB just an ordinary adapter or does it provide a USB port built into the K3 back panel.  And, if not built in, why not.  I don't even have a serial port on my computers anymore (3 Apple macs and one windows laptop).

The KIO3 is standard and included with all K3s.

The KUSB allows the KIO3 to support USB I/O.

The KSUB is a USB to serial adapter. The USB side goes to your computer,
the other end goes to the serial connector on the back of the K3. Do you
need it? Only if you don't have a serial port on your 'puter. There's
nothing special about it. I used a cable I already had.
I got the TCXO for the reason you mentioned. I just wanted it.

OK, I am straight on the KUSB.  I have zillions of USB/Serial connectors, maybe even five of them.

It is an adapter that can be found at electronics stores for anywhere from
$25 to $40.

Re: [K3] My Proposed K3 Configuration so far...(usb adaptors)

GW0ETF
From personal experience some 'cheap' usb-serial adaptors can produce significant levels of rf hash. I don't need 'em at the moment but if I did I'd probably go with the Elecraft one on the assumption it's been checked for noise.

No point spending mega bucks on a top rate receiver and then degrading it with a cheap little adaptor.....

73,

Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 #145)

PS Can Wayne or Eric confirm that their usb adaptor *is* rf-quiet??
