N0SS/QRP ARRL CW Sweepstakes Report

Tom Hammond-3
Well... I didn't set any records this year, BUT I
didn't do too badly either. I was tickled that my
body (still) allowed me to operate virtually the
entire available time... first time in a number
of years I've felt like doing so.

Conditions were decent... not terrific (no 10M at
all!), but still had a good time...

It was GREAT to work so many Elecraft friends
this weekend, and seeing so many of them doing so
well in the SS...which is my VERY FAVORITE
contest of all! I'm sure several folks kicked my
butt, but I still had lots of fun.

The K2 performed as anticipated.. PERFECTLY! I
ran with XFIL #2 (1KHz BW) about 80% of the time,
4000 Hz BW about 15% and maybe 200 Hz BW the
rest. I still prefer to let my ears do most of
the 'signal sorting' for me.. also helps to let
me catch those other ops who still haven't
mastered the art of ZERO BEATING and who persist
in calling many hundreds of Hz off-freq. Few were
missed as a result... MANY would have been missed
had I used the 400 Hz filter most of the time.

RE: N0SS/QRP ARRL CW Sweepstakes Report

Congratulations Tom - that is a VERY good score.  Looking at last year's
results, it would put you up there with the top QRP stations in the country!

Results were more modest here, but I also had a wonderful time.  Operated
the full 24 hours with my temporary antenna setup that the HOA hopefully
didn't notice - no complaints so far, at least.  Felt like Field Day in that
respect.

Ended up with 425 Qs and 75 sections for 63,750 points.  Conditions here in
Colorado were great.  It was a delight to work 80 at night with low noise
level.  Even heard and worked the XF4DL expedition on the low end of 80
during the contest and worked them with my K2, although I did crank up the
power to 10W for that special occasion  ;>)

As always, there were surprises.  The 5 sections I missed were NL (no
surprise) but also SC, NE, WY and MT.  Never even heard any of these last
four sections!!

I agree, this is a fun contest, and my favorite also.

                   ... Craig  AC0DS
