New amp

David-470
Does anyone know what the power supply requirements are going to be for
the elecraft amp when it is ready for sale?
I have to replace mine now and figure I might as well buy one big enough
to handle it as I plan to get one when it becomes available.

I seem to remember that it weighed a ton or two - either it had a dirty
great big PSU built in or my mind is off on a jaunt of its own again. Looked
absolutely brilliant, drool factor was very high.

RE: New amp

N2TK
If I remember correctly the power supply is included. It is a switching
supply. With the smaller amp it is built-in. With the larger amp it is
external.

Power Supply (WAS: New amp)

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
David wrote:

-----------------------

A few things to consider:

1) A 20 amp power supply will run the K2/100 with current to spare. My
K2/100 runs 16 to 18 amps from my Astron 20M.

2) Large supplies (even the 20 am, but especially one like a 50 amp) can be
very dangerous! While you won't get a shock from 13 vdc, they require all
the care you'd exercise working with an automobile battery. Shorts can cause
instant fires. Hot, molten metal spraying, splattering and dribbling all
over the place from a short can burn lots of holes in things, including your
own body and eyes. Shorts tend to become instantly welded in place and if
it's not good enough to cause the crowbar circuit to trip, the power supply
will keep dumping current into the circuit. An RS 50 supply will dump 50
amps into a 0.3 ohm short nonstop. Fuse everything and be careful just the
same.

3) You might get more amps for your buck by buying two or three smaller
supplies than one big supply, and thereby be less likely to experience a
total failure if a supply dies on you.

Not to take issue with what Ron says at all.
I have been using an RS-50M for quite a while now.
Very reliable and built to last.
Nothing scarry about it.
Yes, you do need to be aware of what you are using and take all the
precautions.

Re: Power Supply (WAS: New amp)

Tom Hammond-3
In reply to this post by Ron D'Eau Claire-2
Not to take issue with Ron's comments... they are all appropriate, however
one thing I think which may have been missed, or at least glossed over, is
the fact the Astron supplies include a very good FOLDBACK CURRENT LIMITING
circuit which, if directly shorted (e.g. HOT lead directly to GND) will
instantly reduce the output current (and the voltage) to nearly zero with
little or no damage to the supply, the attached equipment, OR to the
cabling (or user).

This having been said, as with just about any P/S which included this type
of current limiting, if only a partial short (e.g. low resistance, but not
quite a dead short) appears across the output, the P/S will attempt to
provide as much current as it can.. until it reaches that 'trip point'
internally set at which it then thinks it sees a dead short and reverts the
foldback current limiting. So, if you place a really heavy load across such
a p/s, it WILL try to honor your request, so to speak.

All too often, I've (accidently) shorted together the "+" and "-" leads of
my Astron VS35M (35A) supply. The only thing I hear is a momentary 'tick'
when the wires touch, and the I see the voltage and current drop to zero...
removing the short brings everything back to normal.

This is definitely NOT something you'd want to do with a P/S you weren't
ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN has foldback current limiting. For, as Ron stated so
eloquently, BAD THINGS CAN (AND WILL) HAPPEN!!!

---------------------------------------------------

Quite true, Tom. And that's why I said one must be careful with a
high-current supply. It's a lot harder to trip that crowbar circuit on a big
supply!

As I pointed out, a 13.8 volt, 50 amp supply will deliver full current into
a 0.3 ohm load WITHOUT OVERLOADING! That's 690 watts that can cause a lot of
heat in short order, and it won't even trip the crowbar.

Where I've found some ops get a nasty surprise is that they've become used
to seeing the crowbar kill the output when they accidentally short out a 5
or 10 amp supply, but when they do that with a bit of solder or wire on a 50
amp circuit, they're met with a face full of molten copper, solder or
whatever it was that got across the circuit and the power supply barely
hums...

In reply to this post by Ron D'Eau Claire-2
That's what I have done here. I have a 20 amp VJ Products and a
RS-35 Astron. I have them in parallel and fed in to a home brewed
distribution box. I had often wondered if the difference in current rating
would create any problem. Also, I have never checked to see if they both
have exactly the same output voltage. Would either of the above present any
problems?

RE: Power Supply

Don Wilhelm-3
Stan,

If the voltages are ALWAYS exactly the same, you could be OK, but if the
voltage sags on either supply, the one with the higher voltage will try to
feed into the lower voltage supply just as if it were another load.  What
happens next depends on the exact power supply design.  I would surmise that
for one thing, connecting two supplies in parallel will possible defeat the
foldback current limiting.

It would be much better and safer IMHO to use 2 distribution boxes - unless
you have one piece of gear that requires more current than the Astron can
handle by itself.

If I were going to attempt to parallel 2 supplies, I would check that the
design (mainly the protection circuits) allows them to work together
properly and definitely would NOT attempt to parallel 2 different supplies.

Don W3FPR
