New K3 Utility problem

Hi All
K3 utility was working fine until I had a lightning strike. Had to replace the modem to get back on line. I got the PC-the notebook-the-nook and printer going but the utility won't connect. I was using com3 before the new modem for utility but now the pc only shows having com1? Utility tries to connect showing different baud rates and when I hit close port it shows closed port. I've downloaded the latest utility-using the newer elecraft cord. The device manager only shows COM1-plugged in utility-still just COM1. Should I try a Parameter Initialization? A new cord? New pc(hope not) K3 Back to Elecraft?
Where to start looking?

COM1 sounds like an unlikely port.  Can you use the Windows Device Manager
to see if you have the expected device for COM1?  

I'll guess you need a device driver for a USB to Serial Adapter, but I don't
know what you mean by "cord".
