I agree with Jack's remark below. I especially appreciate Bill Tippett
(W4ZV) sharing his operating tips with the group, and have printed his recent messages (as well as the referenced info from K3NA) and enclosed them in my K3 operating manual for future reference. 73, Chuck NI0C K2-10 s/n 5853; K3 s/n 1061 W4GRJ, Jack, wrote: "For what it's worth, as a new K3 owner....I have learned a lot from this discussion." ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
I agree also, although not a new owner, and one having the "noise" I try
all the settings recommended and ideas, I have several other radios to compare to and using S meters is a poor way to compare, all I can say is my K3 has more internal gain and noise than any other radio I have, that includes a couple Yaesu, and Ten Tecs, before the RF gain calib procedure, my internal noise was always a S5 to S6 on the K3 meter, it is now more in line with the book and S2 to S3. but I do not have the band noise to internal noise differential that my other radios do, for instance on 10 meters dipole antenna, preamp on DBV= 99.5 Antenna off and 50 ohm resistor, DBV=99 If you turn off the preamp there is no change from antenna to no antenna. Not exactly what I would expect. Lower bands have more change of course. But even those if you remove the antenna the S meter still shows a great deal of "noise" S2 to S3. You cannot depend on Yaesu meter at the low end as some of us know, but if the same test is done on a 1000-D the meter reads zero with no antenna, and the internal noise is much less than what I hear on the K3. I can hear the same signals on both radios, so sensitivity is not the problem at all, just the amount of IF gain which seems to be very high in my K3. And it is perceived as "noise". What people are refusing to admit that do not have this problem is that there are variations from one K3 to another in performance, this has been proven and is a fact, not hearsay or rumor. Whether its just a few of us with a problem or not I do not know, all I know is there is a problem and with the new DSP board I have on order I am hoping it may change mine to operate as yours does. Not bashing the K3 at all, just recognize that what you do not have or perceive as a problem, others do have, hollering for us to go away solves nothing, and leaves the door open for you to get one next time you order. If you want to swap yours with no problem for mine let me know, more than happy to swap for one of the ones you have with a halo surrounding the dial. 73 Merv KH7C > I agree with Jack's remark below.
