OT: ARRL 500-kHz experiment, asking for assistance

dave.wilburn
I received this email from the folks running the 500 KHz trials.  They
are trying to track down a periodic beacon.  If anyone is interested in
fox hunting 500 KHz style, they would be interested in your results.

Greetings:

As you may be aware, a group of 21 amateurs are
transmitting between 505 and 510 kHz under experimental
license WD2XSH.  More information on our experiment
can be found at www.500kc.com <http://www.500kc.com>.

From time to time since September, we have heard
a station on 505 kHz.  It has the characteristics of
a nondirectional beacon (MCW signal) and identifies
itself as NEED.  It is not on the air continuously,
but it has been heard all over the eastern half of the
USA.  This may be a military beacon used occasionally
for testing or training.

We think this station may be located near you.
We wonder if any members of the WA ARC know anything about
this station, have heard it, or would be interested
in listening for it the next time it is on the air.
If someone wants to join the fox hunt, I will be happy
to put you on the alert list and send more information.

I would appreciate your announcing this at your next
meeting and if space permits printing it in your next
newsletter.

      Please confirm receipt.

      Thanks much.
