Re: OT: Kenwood's new rig?

Richard S. Leary
Fred,
After looking at the back cover of QST, I don't see many, if any buttons or
controls, that are not already included on the K3 either as physical front
panel controls, or menu selections. Other than the 200W output, I'll just
keep my K3, and add the KPA500. Way too many buttons on the TS-990S. And I
did replace my TS-870 with the K3(K)/100 just over 18 months ago.
I chuckled on the INT QKK. Here it's INT QKK = 46, QKK = 46. (K3K/100,
P3K(minus the VGA board). I really do RTFM!
I also sense, with you using the "INT", that you may have once been a radio
op, say 293x1 or 292x1, USAFSS or AACS.
Just made me curious.
In 67/68 we used to make our PX HiFi runs to the Naval Comm Stn PX on Guam,
or Yokota AB, from Wake Island. (Ex KW6GB).

Have fun and maybe see you in the CAQSOP, or CW Sweepstakes. Have not worked
you since CWSS 2005.

In the late 60's, the Exchange at Clark AB in the Philippines carried quite
a bit of Japanese stereo gear.  We called it "Tokyo By Night,"
because the front panels resembled the Ginza.  That sort of faded.
Possibly it's being reincarnated in ham gear.

INT QKK: "How many knobs[or controls] does your radio have?"
QKK 50: "My radio has 50 knobs [or controls]."

INT QKU: "How many of those do you know how to use?"
QKU 4: "I know how to use 4 of them."

Maybe I haven't tried hard enough, but I can't seem to see the reasoning behind the two displays that, apparently, show the same VFO A and VFO B information.  Did they just have panel space left over after running out of button and knob functions?

THe link given http://www.cqdx.ru/ham/new-equipment/ts-990_picture/
gives you a reasonable picture, click the picture and it's its possible to see individual controls.
On a Mac, you can ctrl-scroll to increase the magnification of the screen by significant amounts - I can not only see each function, but can read light blue and grey text on the display and each mark on the meter.

I counted 'double-pots' concentric knobs as two controls, but that only added 11 controls.

So, Rick, will I need to schedule my TS-990 "Check ride" with the FCC or the FAA?

Terry, W0FM

I don't know if this is true or not, but I hear there is a "simulator" being developed by Kenwood.  Sort of like an airliner simulator.  Before you are "authorized" or "certified" to sit at the controls of a 990 on the air you have to take a class and spend time in the simulator.  When you graduate you are then permitted to buy one and operate.  After major firmware upgrades you might have to re-certify.  I also hear that pins will be awarded and will be highly prized and worn on your cap, alongside your DXCC Honor Roll pin.  "TS-990 Certified - level 3" etc.

I guess we will see next week in Dayton... Kenwood will show something :)

Take a close look at the large display to the left. Close to the S-meter... The date says Apr 01... :)

There's an ad for the new rig on the back page of the June QST. I'm not
impressed. Kenwood did make some decent HF rigs back in the days of the
TS-830, 850 and 930. From the 940 on, though, I think they seriously
dropped the ball. This new one just seems like it's too little, too late.

Perhaps the large display area has various options for what
information gets shown-- a full-screen bandscope, waterfall, data,
etc. (assuming  the "meter" is not real). In which case you could
still refer to the dedicated frequency display above the VFO knob.

Anyhow, if the big display dies you would at least be able to know
what your frequencies are until you could get the rig in to the TV
repairman, hahah...

Re: OT: Kenwood's new rig?

Lu Romero - W4LT
In reply to this post by Ken G Kopp
Oh, Goody!

I have let my TS830 and TS850 ratings lapse, but Im type
rated on TS570 and did my check ride for TS590 in WPX CW and
Phone.  Those two rigs resemble the B757 and B767 in
concurrent proficiency requirements.  With that background,
I can simply do the sim session and check ride in TS990 and
get a type rating for it as well!

For the size of the thing, It should have a jump seat.

But seriously, my most interesting controls in that bevy of
knobs buttons and switches is the PROC IN/PROC OUT
concentric knobs.  Knowing Kenwood's legacy for audio
excellence, wouldnt it be nice to have a split band (minimum
2 band) audio compressor/limiter based processor with
handles for input audio AGC level (the PROC IN?) and post
limit "gain makeup" level (PROC OUT?) controls?

That would certainly be nice, and all without external
boxes.  Unfortunately, in the wrong hands (you know, the
ones that can only turn these knobs clockwise to 11), this
could cause serious damage on the air, but I surely would
*LOVE* to have handles for that, along with attack and decay
time constants on the compressor as well (and yes, I will
stop calling you Shirley).

Terry,

Thats probably why Terry, hihihihi.
I think they want the most knobs and push buttons award.  I counted 104 total knobs and push buttons !
We are going to see some DXpedition cluster posts like this:    QRX for 15min, adjusting TS-990    :-)

FYI, there is a Yahoo group for the TS-990S:       [hidden email]
(For further discussion about this radio we should go there.)

Now, back to pursuing the 6O0CW DXpedition with my trusty K3.

Re: OT: Kenwood's new rig?

Phil Hystad-3
The back cover of the latest QST shows a photo of the new Kenwood TS-990.  Last night I kept looking at that picture wondering if I would ever use more then a half-dozen knobs or buttons.  Even with the K3 I use very little.  Indeed, the VFO and the filter width plus maybe AF and RF gain are the primary controls for my preferred CW mode (about 90 percent of contacts).

I guess I should use more K3 buttons but I also use my KX1 a lot and those are the same buttons and controls I use on the K3.  In fact I think those are the only buttons and controls on the KX1.
