For me it was a metal 6L6 oscillator built on a piece
of galvanized sheet metal hand-bent into a "U", and
soldered with a -BIG- soldering iron with acid core
solder. Well, I was -only- eleven. (:-)
The antenna was made ... literally ... from straight
(unused) lengths of baling wire from the ranch's
hay baler.
My first radio was a round-topped Philco that my Mother
later sold for $2! The baling wire antenna had been used
for it.
