OT -- San Diego wild fires

wayne burdick
Administrator
Hi all,

Being from San Diego, I'm very concerned about all the fires in the
county right now (as well as in L.A.). I found one good source of
information that's being updated regularly (www.kpbs.org).

Some remote areas are likely to now be cut off from power and
communications. I hope that those with an opportunity to help with
communications via ham radio will pitch in. If you know of a net where
such traffic is being handled, please feel free to post this
information to our reflector.

My daughter lives in San Diego...she doesn't have to evacuate...yet.   Her
emails tell me that her regular phone, doesn't work, they are not using cell
phones because the emergency crews use cell phones to communicate, and several
friends of hers are packing up.

The last line of the email said "Guess I should have gotten my license years
ago."

I turned on my two-meter HT today and heard K6MF station from NASA Moffett
Field retransmitting audio from this morning's space shuttle launch.  I
checked Nasa TV and they were doing a replay of the launch video as well.
I grabbed this picture of the fires from the first orbital pass.  This is
from this morning, about 10-15 minutes after launch,  so probably just
before 9AM PDT.

Nasa has also its own page devoted to satellite fire imagery on their main
site (linked to from here as well).

The picture appears "upside down" from normal, probably due to the STS and
camera orientation.
