Ken,
That is called a "Beverage-on-Ground" (BOG) antenna (you probably
knew that). Check out ON4UN's "Low-Band DXing" for interesting
antenna ideas.
In 2009 I ran 930-foot of wire to make a BOG for 600m (500-KHz) but
it didn't work as well as my 43x130 foot inverted-L. After a couple
months my neighbor rolled it up as he needed to drive his logging
equipment across where it lay (it was run parallel to his private
airstrip). I ended up with a nice supply of coax (500-foot RG-58)
and a bunch of old RG-8 good only for use as radials. I still have
an L-shaped wire laid out 250-foot on the ground but it was
un-impressive as an antenna. Some day I will roll it up to re-use.
If you are wondering I used the shield as the antenna and ran dc
relay control voltage on the center wire (to change direction of the BOG).

For a number of years on the Friday beginning the
ARRL and CQ 160 contests I walked across the field
behind the house in the direction of JA, unrolling a 5K
foot spool of #18 enameled wire onto the top of the
snow. It seemed to do a reasonable job of receiving.
After the contest(s) I'd roll it back onto it's spool.
Then snowmobiling became popular ....
