OT code practice w/MP3 and iPod?

CX7TT
Off topic a bit but I think quite a few guys would like to improve their
code speed...

I read in the Hints es Kinks of QST Feb 08 a tip on using MP3 player
using downloaded mp files from W1AW...sounds good so far. I downloaded
the mp3 files from W1AW into iTunes library and did sync with iPod Nano.
Does not xfer....I can play the code practice direct from iTunes  but
want the versatility of taking walks with cw singing in my ears....I
have moved the files into library files where other music exists and
delibrately wiped the Nano clean and started over. Still no luck on
downloading the cw files. The specs for Nano say MP3 compatible with 320
to 32000hz...any body had any luck with this setup?
BTW, nice of W1AW to provide mp3 and text to check later or as a 'sing
along'...www.arrl.org/w1aw/morse.html

P.S. K3 in IARU...986 Qs as CW7T...many guys commented on audio...I was
using Logitech computer headset ($49) plugged into back and vox...what a
pleasure to use on cw and ssb!

Try using iTunes to convert the MP3 to an AAC file.  Option is buried
in there somewhere.. "right click" (or whatever) the entry in the
iTunes library list and select Properties (or equivalent), and there
should be an option to convert there somewhere...

The program MorseGen on my website has an option to create MP3 files. You just need to download the optional encoder into the program's folder, and it will turn the WAV files it produces into MP3s.

You have various options to generate practise material, including random letters and numbers, simulated QSO overs, or you can feed it a text file and it will send that as code.

I do this all the time, but I don't use iTunes to manage my iPod :-) The
trick is almost certainly to convert the mp3 to AAC.

I also suggest that you find a copy of Chuck Adams K7QO code practice
course - you can get the CD for the cost of a mailer from the FISTS
office, or find the .iso online at various places (including my website)
and burn your own CD. I used this material (on my iPod) to learn to head
copy, listening while walking to/from the commuter train. It starts slow
and builds up to 20WPM.

The ARRL stuff is also good, and it is interesting to use it to get used
to fast speeds - I often load up the files from a single day and play
them fastest to slowest. After listening to the 40, 35, 30 and 25 wpm
files, 20wpm sounds slow!

Hi Tom,

I have not had a problem with mp3's and iTunes. As a matter of fact
all my music in iTunes is all MP3.

I have been doing something similar for about a year now.

I use the following CW MP3 collections and listen every night on my
iPhone when I go QRT.

N6TR's Sprint practice
http://www.kkn.net/~k5tr/audio/sprint_practice/

K5ZD off the air contest audio
http://www.k5zd.com/live/

G4ZFE /9M2/3W
http://www.g4zfe.com/3w2eraudio.html

Personally I find the real off the air recordings to be much more
effective then computer generated practice.
Training your brain with real life sounds (QRN, QSB, QRM and LIDS) I
have found my code speed to skyrocket.

I hope this helps, it sure has for me.
