OT: soldering practice

DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Hi everyone,

1.  Please reply off-list

2.  I want to teach my daughter how to solder leaded components onto a
circuit board (to start).

3.  Where can I get a cheap (really cheap?) source of boards to play on.
Obviously, they do not need to work, can be broken, etc.

Thanks,
Doug KR2Q

what about some old Personal Computer boards, I know one of the guys I volunterr with
has replaced the caps on some of the boards with enlarged caps, perhaps there are other
parts you could work on

other than that, a surplus store if you have one handy

Doug,

There are two opportunities here. One is your goal of solder practice.
The other is to find a suitable piece of electronics to take apart to
get the circuit board on which the soldering practice can take place.
The experience of taking something apart for the sake of understanding
what is inside is worth the effort. It is more enjoyable because you
know it does not have to be put back together.

I recently took apart a failed laser printer. Now there is an experience
even for a seasoned electronics type like me.

  Doug,

I would suggest you obtain a piece of perf-board with thru-plated holes
along with a bunch of resistors (1/4 watt are not expensive in lots of 200).
Give her the Soldering Tutorial that is on the Elecraft website.

While practice with boards that have had the components removed can be
less expensive, I believe she should start with clean components and
clean board holes - for one thing, it is easier to look at and evaluate
the solder connections after a practice session - too much solder, too
little solder, component lead not heated sufficiently, solder pad not
heated sufficiently are all things you can evaluate when working with a
new board.  A used board will not provide as much information because
there is already a bit of solder on the pads.

In other words, start her out with good tools and materials, this is not
a time to be "cheap" IMHO.

They'd have to be ancient.

The PC world has been almost totally SMD for 10 years now.
Looking at an now 8 year old Athlon Thunderbird mobo I have in the
closet, the only parts which aren't SMD are the caps around the socket 7
socket for power supply filtering and the voltage regulators.

You might be bale to find some old ISA slot peripherals. Hamfests
are a good place to look as Hams never throw anything away, even when
they should.

Could have had me an old IBM RS-6000 and all the perifs for $250 bucks
last year.

Sparkfun.com has pcb 'rejects' available on their website.  They are not
expensive and might get you started.  Once some proficiency is established,
I'd strongly suggest switching to Elecraft's line of "Mini-Mods" as they are
easy to build, usually in an hour or two.  And, you wind up with some really
useful 'toys' that work and will be useful in the shack.

And, when she has this experience under her belt, move on the a K2/10, the
ultimate builder's project.
