I am an owner of an early serial number K3 and have been trying to get info on this for a while. > "....There have been several changes to the K3 and not all of them published. The early PA and driver were > replaced around Jan 2008..." There have been, and will continue to be, ongoing improvements to the K3. This is normal in the life of any product. My s/n 00002 K3 has its original PA and it works just fine. Sometimes changes in the design are to increase the yield of functional modules in manufacturing, to adjust to market availability of certain components, and so forth. Changes that improve performance or reliability are made public and mod kits are generally made available. Or a module swap may be instituted, such as the DSP LPF in recent months, or the revision of the KXV3 to the KXV3A to support the K144XV internal 2m module You can always compare the schematics of early K3s with the latest K3s. We update the schematic package approximately annually. We published the original set of schematics in October 2007 on the website. We updated the package of schematics in October of 2008, and again in January of this year. We'll do it again late this year or early next. Don't worry. Hook up your antenna and enjoy your K3! 73, Lyle KK7P ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

If you compare the early schematics with the latest versions you can see quite clearly what changes have been made since the K3 was first launched. 73 -- David G4DMP Leeds, England, UK ------ ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

The K3 worked great right from the first radios. All of the important and essential improvements have been in the firmware. I have done very few of the mods to my K3 #222 and see no point in spending time and money "keeping my K3 up to date" when the changes would result in no perceptible (to me) improvement. I solved the lack of bass audio issue by using high impedance headphones and amplified computer speakers at far less cost and hassle than swapping out a DSP board.
I'm sure anyone who bought an early K3 and has not been following this reflector would be using it in blissful ignorance of the fact that modifications had been made and not fretting over it.
