I know that Wayne and Eric are not fond of the "Me too" type postings, but
this is one instance in which it may well be worth stressing a point.
Namely, the K3 is not a difficult radio to operate.
Jumping cold into the Elecraft Reflector could easily lead one to believe
otherwise because, given the great flexibility of this quasi-SDR rig, there
are a host of interesting and neat and clever things one can do to and with
the radio, and more power to anyone who takes advantage of them. They
represent refinements that appeal to the experimenter mentality inherent in
most hams. The fact is, however, for the average person, the K3 is ready to
operate out of the box. In my little contest station with a couple of
antennas and a couple of logging programs and rig control, I chose to go
into the CONFIG menu to tailor two or three things to my liking, but for
normal operations, I touch only the same controls that I would on any
amateur radio transceiver: AF Gain, RF Gain, Filter Width, Tuning Knob, and
sometimes RIT. NR on a bad day.
No-one should ever be frightened off by the versatility of the K3. It's
there if you need it or if you enjoy playing with the radio's powerful
capability, but lots of us don't and therefore all these goodies may happily
remain transparent to us.
