Optivisor?

CX7TT
Looking to buy an Optivisor over the internet but not sure what power to
get...I usually wear 1.50 or 1.75 cheaters  to read...any suggestions
for what to get to be able to solder those itty, bitty Elecraft parts?

Hi Tom,

I have several ....

There are extra lenses available and I suggest you
buy several different powers.  Then, you'll be able
to choose to fit the need.  They change easily with
just two screws.

I bought something similar on eBay a couple of years ago. It was made in China and is called "Light Head Magnifying Glass" model MP244L. I seem to remember it cost around USD 20 equivalent. It includes four lenses: 1.2X, 1.8X, 2.5X, 3.5X. I don't know if it is still available, but it might be worth a search.

Re Optivisor,

I use this magnifier from Harbor Freight for surface mount work:
ITEM 38896-5VGA
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=38896

It comes with flip up and down lenses that allow easy change of
magnification as well as a loupe lens that rotates into view on the right
eye only for really close up work. The lenses are plastic but there is no
visible optical aberration, quite good in fact. Sometimes this item goes on
sale for around $4. I don't use the built in lights much.

At this price I don't worry much about handling them around the workbench; I
happen to live close to Harbor Freight and am in there regularly. However I
haven't needed to buy another magnifier since I purchased these three years
ago.

One accessory that most people don't seem to know about is the swing-down
loupe. I have this and love it - it's the perfect thing for very
close inspection of solder joints and PC board traces.

The only downside is that it makes changing out the binocular lenses
a bit more fiddly - but I rarely change from my #4.

For local sources of Optivisor, try art and craft supply stores.
