Order is in! Also Shure 444 question

Benson-2
My order is in!

Is anyone on the list using the Shure 444 desk mic with the K3?  Can you share some wiring and/or rig setup tips?

RE: Order is in! Also Shure 444 question

Don Nesbitt

Yes, I use a Shure 444D from time to time with mine (I usually use a cheap computer headset – which is very convenient and works very well!) and the audio reports with the 444D are awesome with all EQ values set to zero (default).  Be sure to switch the 444D to the “Low Impedance” setting (bottom of mic) and adjust the K3’s audio gain accordingly.  If you get a 444 that is ONLY “High Impedance” (don’t remember if the original 444 was switchable) – or – you don’t set the switch on the bottom of the mic to “Low Impedance,” – it will sound muddy, muffled and like crap!

Wire the mic plug as per the K3 manual.

Unfortunately the mic I bought is the regular 444, high impedance. Can the K3 work OK with it?

Shure has made various versions of the 4xx-series mics over the years, and they publish data sheets for their products on their website. The 444 is a dynamic mic, and the versions I've seen can be wired either balanced or unbalanced, switch can be wired various ways. Check your collection of product data/instruction sheets for color codes, switch wiring, etc. The 444 should work wonderfully with a K3. Because it has its own 3 kHz emphasis, you don't need to add it (or as much) with TXEQ in the K3. I would, however, roll off some low end (that is, cut the lower three octaves in TXEQ).

The K3 works well with VOX or with PTT. Take your pick.

High Z Shure 444 Mic to K3

Jim Brown-10
In reply to this post by Don Nesbitt

I would wire it low-Z if there's a choice, but if high-Z is the only option, try it anyway, and try playing with TXEQ if it's muddy. It's a dynamic mic, so there's no distortion created by loading. The most that COULD happen is only some some frequency response change, and the K3 has enough built-in EQ to fix a lot of response change.

"Muddy, muffled" sounds like high end rolloff, which would be caused by capacitive loading.
