[P3] How do I program these function keys?

I think I'm being dense, but I can't figure out how to program the
function keys on my P3. I'm trying to set the span settings.

From what I understand I just tap span, dial in what I want, and then
tap one of the function keys. It doesn't seem to work so what step am I
missing? Staring at the manual isn't helping me this morning.

Set the span to the width you want

Tap [MENU]

turn select knob until you see: Span Set

Tap or Hold the FN# you want for that span

Tap [MENU] to exit

I *just* figured it out. I finally broke out Fred's book and it finally
made sense.
