[P3] Installation Success

John W2XS
This week I received and installed P3 S/N 476.  It took less than 2 hours to go from opening the box to watching signals on the display, and that included the K3 gain modification. It was nice of Elecraft to include both an SMT and a through-hole resistor for the K3 mod.  I chose the SMT device, which wasn't too hard to install.

I updated both the K3 and P3 firmware to the latest beta revisions.  I really like the "knob tap" and "knob hold" assignments to the function keys. Now I need to learn what the signal displays are telling me.  (Example - some AM BCB stations seem to use a high level of compression, keeping the sideband amplitudes at a constant level.  The waterfall display has lots of green in it with a red carrier.  Other stations have sidebands that slope more and the waterfall is mostly blue with specs of green). Using the P3 for finding shortwave stations has been lots of fun. The display of K3's bandwidth setting is nice but now I see that the bandwidth could be made larger to capture more of the AM signal.  That was the reason that I originally bought the wider FM filter. But that is another discussion. hi hi.

I updated my pictures on QRZ.com and eHam.net. eHam.net provides a larger-sized picture after clicking on it.

Thanks to the Elecraft team for another great product, and inclusion of all needed cables etc. to make installation quick and easy.
