The power switch really isn't necessary; holding the QSY knob in could
perform the same function. Most people will select for the P3 to come 'on' with the K3 anyway. By freeing up the power switch position, you create five 'slots' (the former power switch and the 4 PF buttons). Then, you make those five positions into discrete half-height buttons, for a total of 10 across the bottom of the display. The 'menu' button next to the QSY knob stays as-is. Very little additional board work or sheet metal changes would be needed, and, the buttons and caps themselves are already Elecraft stock parts, from the K1. (Yes, I know they'd have to be silk screened for this application.) These ten new buttons would be labeled "160" "80" "40" et cetera; yielding the much coveted dedicated band switches for each band, and thus enabling full coverage direct band selection and allowing for equally-wished-for band stacking registers. This also eliminates the confusing choice of 8 unlabeled PF buttons, which is what's there now. ;-) Steve KZ1X/4 K1, K2, K3, etc. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Personally I'd greatly more appreciate 8 PF's which can easily be
labeled by the LCD. I'd prefer even more the ability to have the power button as yet another PF as I'll probably have the P3 power up upon power applied and then simply plug it into the +12V out on the K3. I honestly have gotten well used to using M>V then a number to change bands and never use the BAND rocker. I'll have things that I'd like to put on those PF's but my rig won't be using them as band switching buttons. Honestly with two taps I can get a bandswitch done in less time than a tap and hold takes. What I would like to see is if a PF is pointed at a menu item that sends the radio to that menu item in the actual menu. So if I set a PF to AGC THR I can then simply use VFO B to quickly get to the other AGC settings. This way I can use some of the PF's as quick bookmarks into the configuration menu. ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Sat, 2009-08-22 at 01:12 -0400, inventor_sixty_one wrote: > The power switch really isn't necessary; holding the QSY knob in could > perform the same function. > Most people will select for the P3 to come 'on' with the K3 anyway. > By freeing up the power switch position, you create five 'slots' (the former > power switch and the 4 PF buttons). > Then, you make those five positions into discrete half-height buttons, for a > total of 10 across the bottom of the display. > The 'menu' button next to the QSY knob stays as-is. > Very little additional board work or sheet metal changes would be needed, > and, the buttons and caps themselves are already > Elecraft stock parts, from the K1. I use the same method to band hop as Brett I still would rather operate
the rig with out the computer soft ware controlling it old habits die slowly. snip I honestly have gotten well used to using M>V then a number to change bands and never use the BAND rocker. I'll have things that I'd like to put on those PF's but my rig won't be using them as band switching buttons. Honestly with two taps I can get a bands witch done in less time than a tap and hold takes. Snip But I still miss the Band Stacking Register because I like to separate my favorite cw spots from voice, might it be possiable to have this [M>V] function remember two frequency's or more that might be controlled by [mode] first being selected? How about being able to set the Programmable Function Buttons to change to
what ever band you like, but not making that permanent for those of us that have other uses in mind. I use M1-M4 for doing some of this.... I setup M1 for the CW portion of
the band. I setup VFOA to the bottom of the band setup VFOB to the top and then setup the mode and everything. Then I do the same for SSB on M2. This not only gives me a quick way to go to the two band segments but it also allows for scanning after recalling one of these memories. ~Brett On Sat, 2009-08-22 at 08:17 -0500, ka9zap wrote: > I use the same method to band hop as Brett I still would rather operate > the rig with out the > computer soft ware controlling it old habits die slowly. > snip > > I honestly have gotten well used to using M>V then a number to change > bands and never use the BAND rocker. That has already been stated that it will work that way...
