P3 desires

Bill Frantz
I have been using the P3 for a while now and have a few desires:

(1) When the notch filter is active, show where it is in the
green filter bandwidth display. I found I could easily know when
to turn the notch filter off when using auto-notch in SSB by
watching the P3 display. I could not do the same when using
manual notch to eliminate a strong PSK signal.

(2) Save the display parameters -- scale, span, ref lvl etc. --
by band and mode. I like a very wide span for SSB so I can see
many stations and a narrow one for PSK so I can see individual stations.

And more controversially:

(3) Keep the waterfall running during transmit so the display
gives a sense of elapsed time. This change would occur naturally
if the P3 is modified to monitor the transmitted signal.
(Monitoring the transmitted signal might help us PSK folk keep
our signals clean too.)

What do people think?

Cheers - Bill, AE6JV

Bill,

Your number 3 would be helpful and has been long promised and was, I was
told, on the list at either number one or two...since then, not a word so
not sure when/if it will see the light of day.

I may be in the minority, but I bought my P3 with this feature in mind and
I was told it would be implemented in the future but I am not sure how
'future' relates to the present...:-)   (of course age creates some spacial
discrepancies..TIC)

The Sensor input on the rear of the P3 I was told is for the Tx monitoring.

Other folks here may know some more.

I can think of a number of things that could be useful in the band pass window.  In addition to the notch I would have use for an indicator for the receive offset frequency and also the peak filter.  Things could get busy unless things were set up on a selective basis.

Re: P3 desires

Bill Frantz
In reply to this post by Bill Frantz
I got this question off list and I thought my answer would be of
wider interest.

>How do you see effects of 'NOTCH' on the P3?

Currently you get a wide green band on a blue background of the
band scope which covers the frequencies your current filters are
letting through. If the notch indicator divided that green band
into two bands, with a blue space between them the width of the
notch filter, I think it would be quite self explanatory. The
waterfall below the the band scope will let you know what is
going on in the places you have filtered out.

Re: P3 desires

Don Wilhelm-4
Bill,

It would be nice, but it may not be possible.
Remember that the IF output is prior to the DSP, and the DSP is where
the notch is generated.
So the signal input to the P3 does not contain any notch information.
You can say that "it is just a small matter of programming" since the K3
and P3 'talk' to each other, but the necessary information probably is
not available from the DSP, nor is there any provision in the P3 to
process that information.
So that "small matter of programming" would become a very large hit to
both the K3 and P3 firmware.

Re: P3 desires

N5GE
In reply to this post by Bill Frantz
I don't use the notch because I only work CW on the ham bands, and I
use the "U" indicators, but when I do work phone on MARS frequencies
I would like to have the notch width appear between the vertical
markers of the "U" as a colored band the same color as the "U" that
matched the width of the notch centered on the notch frequency.

Another suggestion:

When working MARS frequencies, some of their MARS members have their
mic's set as though they are a broadcast station, which tends to make
their signals too far to the low side for good phone HF comunication,
so I use SHIFT on those stations.

It would be nice to be able to see the shift with about a 50%
transparent band showing the shift.

Niether of the above being a crucial update for me.
