P3 fighting logging and contest programs

k7ua
My P3 is causing problems with my logging program (Logic 8) and with the N1MM contest logger.  With the serial cable running to the P3 and looping to the K3 the correct frequency is not being picked up by Logic.  N1MM is worse.  Tuning the VFO on the K3 is tracked by N1MM, but the K3 keeps jumping into FM or AM mode.  Turning off the FM mode in the K3 menu didn't stop it.   If I use a "Y" cable to feed the P3 and K3 all of these problems go away, but then the frequency on the band scope dispay is bogus.  Any one had this happen?  73,  K7UA

I'm forwarding this directly to the P3's designer, Alan, N1AL. He'll
contact you. We're working to make sure there are no conflicts between
the P3 and external software applications.

I've not had the specific problems you have, but I did have problems with
the P3 crashing and needing a reset after each TX when running N1MM. Then
I realized that I had removed the #10 copper bond between the computer
and the K3 to use a different computer, and had not re-connected it. When
I restored the bonding wire, the problem went away.

I also use the K9YC serial cable (CAT5, with a pair per circuit, and with
the return for each circuit going to the CHASSIS, not pin 5) between the
computer and the P3. I'm using the Elecraft-supplied serial cable between
the P3 and the K3.

I also have issues when LP Bridge is sharing the serial port with the
VE7CC cluster program and N1MM when I added the P3. I had to turn off LP
Bridge to solve that. I suspect that both Alan and Larry are working on
that.

I have no problems with N1MM Logger or DXLab Suite with the K3 set
to 38.400, the P3 "Host Serial Port Rate" set to 38.400 and the
computer software set for 38.400.  microHAM Router is also part
of the system and set to 38.400.  Automatic data rate detection
(e.g. "auto baud") is disabled everywhere.

One can not "Y" active (polling) RS-232 circuits - one device must
be "listen only" and both the computer (logger) and P3 expect to
poll the transceiver actively.

I got some goofy results with loggers when I first hooked up mine too.  Then
I thought to check the RS-232 data rate settings.  When you install the P3,
it defaults to 38 K, and if your loggers are set to some other rate you will
get garbage.  Setting them to the same rate cleared things up here.  -  just
something else to check.

Craig,

I'm pretty sure that they are all set to 38K, but I will check to be certain.

You have a good suggestion.

Look in MENU you can assign a different baud rate to match your logging software, k3.3
I run WT 4.5, wt, k3, p3 set to 9600 baud.
When you run p3 utility for updates etc, your p3 will set itself to 38500 baud for downloading.
When you exit the setup it will go back to default of 9600 baud, which is set in p3 menu.

This was a good thing to check, but everything is set for the 32K rate.

I'm not having any problem using LOGic 8 with the P3 connected the
same way.  Have not tried N1MM yet.
