Seeking external speaker recommendations

George Thornton
I am looking for recommendations on external speakers for the K3.  I am
primarily interested in voice modes.

I would use these primarily in my shack.  My contesting has thus far
been limited to Field Day, but who knows where this might lead.

Re: Seeking external speaker recommendations

MontyS
?Hi George -

The most popular recommendation is for low-impedance unpowered speakers.
Wayne, N6KR of Elecraft, recommends these.  Cheap computer speakers work
well, but may not offer the frequency response you want.  Radio Shack has
speakers.

Powered speakers are subject to RF interference as they are usually poorly
bypassed.  I use Apple powered speakers that I modified to eliminate the
buzz and squeals from RF interference.

George,
The back up rig here is an Icom 746Pro that I had also purchased the SP-20.  The speaker has twin inputs, so one from the K3/100 & one from the 746Pro.

I can't really attest to the SSB quality, as I never use that mode.  But, the sound quality for CW when using the K3 is fantastic.  It has 4 selectable audio filters.

Best of luck with your search.

  George,

Scour the second-hand stores and pawn shops in your area for some
efficient bookshelf stereo speakers with good fidelity.  I found a pair
of RS Optimus speakers a while back and am enjoying using them with my
K3.  It is difficult to find reasonably priced, small, unamplified
speakers these days, but they used to be plentiful.  Try to steer clear
of the computer type amplified speakers.  While they will work, they are
often affected by RF and can set off a nasty noise when you transmit.
You can find bookshelf speakers new at audio stores and places like Best
Buy, but they are not inexpensive.

Re: Seeking external speaker recommendations

Don,

On a "tip" from one of the guys working in the Elecraft booth at Dayton a
couple of years ago, I purchased a pair of Insignia speakers at Best Buy.  I
don't see the model number on them, but they are 4", 3-way speakers rated at
5 to 40 watts.  Black case that are 4 3/4" wide, 7 1/2" tall, and a little
over 4" deep.  They are a about an inch taller than the K3 (when the stand
is out), but look very nice next to the K3;  and they sound good.

That is my 2 cents worth.

I used the SP-20 on my K3 for a while, mainly on SSB.  I didn't like it.   I
could never get enough volume out of the speaker without distortion from the
K3 to suit me.  Incidentally, I also used it on a 746 Pro and never
experienced this problem.

I know everyone is going to say get an unpowered speaker, but I purchased
the West Mountain Radio COMspkr for $40 and they work very well and sound
really good to me (use your 8 band RX EQ to tailor the audio) and I've never
experienced RFI problems, even at Kilowatt Plus power levels.  The volume
level issue that bugged me with the SP-20 is also a non-issue, of course.
Powered speakers may not be for everyone, but 40 bucks isn't a lot to spend
after you've plopped down over $3K for a rig, especially you don't want to
hassle with finding the speaker that gives you the volume level that you're
looking for.

Re: Seeking external speaker recommendations

Matt Zilmer
I use these:
http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/digital_music_systems/computer_speakers/companion_2/index.jsp

I use them both on K3 and laptop audio out.  Using the K3's RX EQ is
useful for tailoring the bass audio, since these speakers have quite a
bit of bass response.

All,

The Radio Shack Minimus 7 speakers came highly
recommended.  Unfortunately they are not available new
anymore although you may find them at a flea.  As I
remember, they are not too efficient.

The other 2 speakers that are efficient are the Heath
SB-600 and the Drake MS-4.    Both sound very good.

I'm very happy with my West Mountain Radio COMspkrs.
Have had no problems with RFI at high power levels (1KW).

Regardless of what speaker/s you use, remember not to
insert a mono plug into the rear speaker jack.  (;-)

Surplus Motorola 2 way radio speakers work great with the K3

they are Cheap at hamfests, Efficient  and they are well optimised for
voice communications, look for 2 or 4 Ohm ones

Yes.  In general, what you want in a speaker for ham gear is very SMOOTH
(flat) response in the speech range (300 Hz to 5 kHz), and fairly high
voltage sensitivity (at least 90 dB at 1 meter for 2.8 volts).  In
general, the larger the loudspeaker, the less power it requires. Thus,
small loudspeakers tend to have fairly low voltage sensitivity.  Small
cheap speakers also tend to have lousy frequency response -- very bumpy
response curves that degrade speech intelligibility.

The Radio Shack Minimus 7s have long been well thought of in the audio
world. The TOA 22-ME-AV is even better, and there was a company called
Triad that made some great compact loudspeakers.  All of them are long
discontinued, but you might find them on EBay.
