P3

dhhdeh
Ever the contrarian, I didn't find my P3 fun at all.

Sold it after less than a year and not looked back
in regret since.

IMO it's confusing, distracting and pricey for
what you get .

My $.02....

YMMV....

Re: P3

Dave,

The P3 NEEDS the upgrade to monitor the Tx of the K3 in all modes. This
will make it far more useful.

The wait for this has dragged on too long and still no word on a release
'time-frame'........

I was on 10 meters SSB  a bit ago, and without the P3 it would have been
difficult to find stations that had the strength needed to work them.  The

Re: P3

Stephen G4SJP
In reply to this post by Gary Gregory-2
For getting through pile-ups I have found the P3 to be invaluable in having
a better idea of where to call.  However, I am somewhat frustrated by the
lack of progress in implementing P3 and P3SVGA features.  There is so much
potential just waiting to be unlocked that I am disappointed that it has
been many months since the last firmware upgrade.

Having said that, the P3 has become an integral part of the way that I
operate and I cannot imagine being without it.

Re: P3

Richard Fjeld
In reply to this post by Bill K9YEQ
They will have to pry the P3 out of my cold, dead, hands.   I don't like to think of my age, much less tell it, but I found it easy to set up and program the buttons with time saving operations that I like.  I calibrated it with my XG2 so that I can see the actual signal strength on the P3 without needing to turn on my pre-selector or use ABS in the K3.  I seldom need to use a menu for anything.  When I get bored, there is more I can learn, and program.  Eric and Wayne had vision when they planned the pair.

I have not seen it mentioned how it displays in real-time without the latency that is seen with computer/screen pan-adapters.  I'll bet there is a side by side comparison of such on YouTube.  Anybody have a link handy that shows it?

Re: P3

Gary Gregory-2
In reply to this post by Stephen G4SJP
Using the P3 to 'look' at the pile-up and setting a frequency to call on IS
the single most important benefit of the P3 (for me) and this works a treat.
As for 'other' uses I find it uninspiring as I don't have any need for a HD
large screen external display. I am portable 24/7 and there IS a limit on
'stuff' I can drag around...:-)
The introduction of the Tx 'option' long promised but as yet not spoken
about with any clarity IS a great feature (when it arrives) and for me
something to look forward too.

Don't get me wrong, it IS a typical great product and useful tool!

Re: P3

Jim AB3CV
As a mostly CW OP chasing DX I find the P3 to be a huge advantage in
watching the behavior of the DX OP to determine his likely next move and
place my signal accordingly. I got mine when I was still QRP and I credit
it with allowing me to achieve DXCC in just three months. I've since added
the 100w option and now the KPA500 but being loud doesn't help if you're in
the wrong place.

With the P3 it's almost like cheating.

BTW, loud to me is loud compared to my previous 5W existence. My QTH is in
a CCR no antennas neighborhood so my modest antennas lurk in the woods.
Wire dipoles, wire verticals and a hexbeam (also wires.)

The P3/SVGA is the single most useful piece in the K3 line one of the main
reasons I chose the line was this feature and the K3 receiver. I know
several ops that feel the same way also about the panadapter.

It would be great to see K3 Tx on the P3. However, I continue to be dazzled
and appreciative of the P3. I love it and love the small screen next to my
K3. Perfect for me and very helpful.

Re: P3

Doug Turnbull
Bob and All,
One is happy with the small screen until the PSVGA card with large
display is installed then the bar is raised.    The larger screen allows one
to look at a larger portion of the band and to better visualize what is
there.   I remember thinking that a twelve inch black and white screen TV
was all that anyone could ever wish for.

Trouble is that you can get to the point that you do not wish to
operate without the panadaptor - especially a really good panadaptor.   Then
when a friend considers remote operation with his K3/0, Elecraft can not
deliver.   My friend is driven to the new Flex 6000 as a result.   I am not
the ham concerned!  We become spoiled.   There is much to be said for being
happy with a KX1 and dipole but then ours is a technological hobby.

PS The other day while ten was open I observed a strange signal in the CW
portion of the band.   I tuned up to it and then changed modes until it
decoded using FM.   There were a few Italians carrying out a bootleg
personal conversation as if on the telephone.   I also find the P3 very
interesting to observe "noise signals" drifting up and down the band. The P3
adds to my knowledge of just what is happening on the band and for me is a
necessity.

It would be great to see K3 Tx on the P3. However, I continue to be dazzled
and appreciative of the P3. I love it and love the small screen next to my
K3. Perfect for me and very helpful.

I have a P3 and a SDR-IQ. I much prefer the IQ over the P3 even though the IQ is tied to  a computer.

IMO it's confusing, distracting and pricey for
what you get .

My $.02....

YMMV....
