After digging around through my big klunky USB keyboards I went looking for a smaller one as a companion to the K3/P3/P3SVGA.
I found this one on eBay ordered it and received it today. It's a copy of the Apple Bluetooth keyboard but USB and in PC format. Matches my existing Apple keyboards and takes up very little space. Works great! http://www.ebay.com/itm/320763719297?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648 Rick K6LE ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Guess I should have mentioned I was using the keyboard with the P3SVGA Keyboard/Data beta software. Any reason that my existing "wireless" USB keyboard would not work with the P3/SVGA setup? Its RF currently causes me no problems in my shack.

I'm not familiar with the P3 firmware, nor your particular keyboard,
but one reason that MIGHT prevent it from working is if the P3 firmware relies on USB HID boot mode support, which some wireless devices do not implement. Maybe Paul can comment if boot mode support is required by the firmware.... 73, ~iain / N6ML On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 10:06 AM, Terry Schieler <[hidden email]> wrote: > Any reason that my existing "wireless" USB keyboard would not work with the P3/SVGA setup? Hi John,
What functionality is the external keyboard supposed to provide under the 1.05 SVGA firmware? I haven't seen any posts from anybody indicating that they are using a keyboard. With every other new feature there are usually numerous posts describing the great new features. 73, Mike K2MK

I was surprised to learn that an Apple keyboard won't work.
Funny, since a PC keyboard works fine on an Apple! I tried two, an original unit that came with my Cube and the Aluminum one that came with my iMac. Neither worked. Rick,
That *may* be due to the USB HID boot mode issue I speculated about. Macs don't have BIOS like PCs, and so the Apple keyboards may not implement boot mode support. I'm still speculating, but it makes sense (to me, anyway).... 73, ~iain / N6ML On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 5:43 PM, Rick Prather <[hidden email]> wrote: > I was surprised to learn that an Apple keyboard won't work. > > Funny, since a PC keyboard works fine on an Apple! > > I tried two, an original unit that came with my Cube and the Aluminum one that came with my iMac. I am really not surprised.
Anything "Apple" has been "apple-centric" since day one. I recall modifying standard 3.5 inch floppy drives so they would work with the Apple II computers. Apple does a lot of "strange stuff" to maintain its differences. That is why I will not buy Apple - it "sucks you in" with a bargain and easy usability, but then tells you that everything "Apple" is proprietary and will cost you an extra bundle of money. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/25/2012 8:43 PM, Rick Prather wrote: > I was surprised to learn that an Apple keyboard won't work. > > Funny, since a PC keyboard works fine on an Apple! > > I tried two, an original unit that came with my Cube and the Aluminum one that came with my iMac. Rick,
I don't have to *go* there, I have already *been* there. All that Apple produced in the 1970 through 1990 period was proprietary. Yes one addition to the Apple II was 3.5 inch drives. I modified several Segate 3.5 inch drives to work with the Apple system because the price for the apple drives was more than 5 times the price of the Segate drive. The current pricing situation may have evened out, but the early marketing practices of Apple have soured my taste buds - if it has an Apple name on it, I will look the other way. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/25/2012 10:32 PM, Rick Prather wrote: > Don't go there Don! > > BTW, the fact that Apple doesn't use a BIOS, or a Register is not a negative in my mind! > > Also, I don't remember Apple II's using 3.5 floppies.. > > Wow, I see this train leaving the tracks! > > Rick > K6LE > > On 7/25/2012, at 6:10 , Don Wilhelm <[hidden email]> wrote: > >> I am really not surprised. >> Anything "Apple" has been "apple-centric" since day one. >> >> I recall modifying standard 3.5 inch floppy drives so they would work with the Apple II computers. >> >> Apple does a lot of "strange stuff" to maintain its differences. Hi Iain,
Thanks for the message link but while I can view CW, RTTY, and PSK text on my external monitor, connecting a standard USB Dell keyboard to the P3 does not permit me to send PSK or RTTY. I tried all of the Data modes and I can send PSK and RTTY via my paddle but not from a P3 attached keyboard. So I'm still wondering if the keyboard input part of this beta release has been implemented. 73, Mike K2MK

Mike,
Yes, the send function works fine. Are you using FSK-D or PSK-D Data modes? Are you seeing the Cap Locks light light up as a test of your keyboard? Mike,
I guess it's too early in the morning. Of course you are in PSK-D or FSK-D or you wouldn't be copying data. So that leaves my question about the Caps Lock light working. Also, do you have the asterisk showing in the lower right corner of the status box? I found with a couple of keyboards that I had to unplug and re-plug them to keep them working. A problem, BTW, I am not having with the keyboard that was the original subject of this thread. It works with my $6.00 plastic "roll-up" keyboard.

Hi Rick,
Yes I've tried PSK-D and FSK-D. And yes the keyboard caps lock light does go on. I'm not sure what you mean by an asterisk in the status box but no there is no asterisk on either the large monitor or the P3. I did plug and unplug the keyboard. I'm not going to pursue this further as I'm happy with PC software control of RTTY and PSK. I'll debug the problem later when the P3 is able to do some other interesting keyboard related things. 73, Mike K2MK
