Regarding the Synthesizer ALC mod, **with care** the 180k resistor(s) (plural if you have a KRX3) can be installed without removing the synthesizer board(s). See #3 below.

The "Elecraft procedure" is easier written than done (I've fought with (and lost) the lockwashers more times that I care to). Running the cables and getting the KRX3 in place is also not the most simple/intuitive operation. It's certainly not a five minute job for me even though I've pulled and installed KRX3 several times between my two rigs. 73, ... Did the mod last week.
I have the KRX3 and I feel that it was not in the way at all. Nor did I have a problem with the cables. The most uneasy part was getting the screws and washers in. The way that worked for me was: connect the cable(s) to the KSYN3-board; take 2 crews and inside tooth washers, put the screws (with the washers over it) in the holes of the Ksyn3 board; place the board in the socket but do not press it down entirely, so that you can pull it back towards the KRX3 a tiny bit; place the splitwashers over the screw-end (now between the KSYNS3 board and the K3 chassis)using a small nose pliers . Take a small philips screw driver, place it on one screw, place a thumb on the other screw and press the board in place. Then fasten the screws. Worked three out of four times :-) 73, Arie PA3A -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- > It seems a poor choice to try installing that resistor with > the Syn board in place when it's "hammer simple" to pull the > board and work on it properly. I agree with W4TV, for me installing the KRX3 the first time was a real
nightmare. I kept getting stymied by the cables and tilts required to get it in. As far as removing and installing the PL board, we older guys don't have skinny, dexterous fingers any more. One of these days a dropped lock washer that can't be found or retrieved is going to happen. Too bad there isn't some kind of captive spacer instead of lock washers. Something like a piece of threaded nylon that one screws on. Life would be so much easier. Perhaps the metallic composition is required. I don't know. 73 de Brian/K3KO Arie Kleingeld PA3A wrote: > Did the mod last week. > I have the KRX3 and I feel that it was not in the way at all. > Nor did I have a problem with the cables. > > The most uneasy part was getting the screws and washers in. > The way that worked for me was: > > connect the cable(s) to the KSYN3-board; > take 2 crews and inside tooth washers, put the screws (with the washers > over it) in the holes of the Ksyn3 board; > place the board in the socket but do not press it down entirely, so that > you can pull it back towards the KRX3 a tiny bit; > place the splitwashers over the screw-end (now between the KSYNS3 board > and the K3 chassis)using a small nose pliers . > Take a small philips screw driver, place it on one screw, place a thumb > on the other screw and press the board in place. > Then fasten the screws. > Worked three out of four times :-) > > > 73, > Arie PA3A > > > > > > -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- > > >>It seems a poor choice to try installing that resistor with >>the Syn board in place when it's "hammer simple" to pull the >>board and work on it properly. > > > The "Elecraft procedure" is easier written than done (I've > fought with (and lost) the lockwashers more times that I > care to). > > Running the cables and getting the KRX3 in place is also not > the most simple/intuitive operation.
