PTT "fix" in K3

Bob Evans-4
My only complaint in both my K2s was the ability to have my contesting
software key the PTT line while on CW.  I understand the K2 was built with
the backpacker in mind that might want to send CW with his MIC, but I hope
this idea was not carried over into the K3 (or at least make it optional).

Can the K3 use the PTT line on CW without going key down?  i.e. simply
placing the rig in transmit before a CW character is sent?

I can't wait to get my hands on one...I'm just hoping eBay won't be flooded
with K2s going up for sale.   ;-)

Yes. There are separate connectors for PTT in, handkey/keyer/computer,
paddle, and keying out (to amps or transverters). There's also digital
band data out (4 lines) and various other signals on the ACC jack.

Me too! They're two entirely different rigs, with different purposes.

K3 in product lineup.

Douglas Todd
Congratulations on the new K3 !

I'm curious about how Elecraft views the market for the K2 now that the K3
is available. Currently there are four different radios, each built at
different times using different technologies. The K3 and a reasonably set-up
K2-100 cost about the same. From what I've seen, the only factor that the K2
'wins'  with respect to the K3 is the receiver operating current. Could you
give us some insight on what the relative advantages are of the particular
radios ? I.e., In what cases would the K2 'win' against the K3, or the K1
'win' against the K1X ?  Put another way, If the K3 has not made the K2
obsolete, why not ?

Thanks.

Douglas Todd, KE7GYQ.

The K2 is far smaller, 50% lighter, and has lower current drain, thus
it's ideal for limited space/camping/backpacking operations. With fewer
controls to learn, it's an ideal first HF radio, especially in the QRP
configuration.

It's also about half the price (base model).

Finally, it's the only all-band HF transceiver offered as a "full" kit
(i.e., you get to do some soldering). This is one reason for the lower
cost. But it also makes for a great building/learning experience --
according to our 6000+ K2 customers!

Re: Re: K3 in product lineup.

Bob Nielsen
Add to that:  internal battery, probably some other things I can't
think of right now.

I suspect that the K3 might cut into the demand for a fully loaded K2
with KPA100, KAT100, etc., but think there will still be a ready
market for the lower power version.

Besides, you can never have too many radios (although my wife hasn't
accepted that argument).

The K3 is definitely on my wish list, as soon as the budget permits
(un-retiring is NOT an option!)
