Does anyone here operate Pactor I via soundcard? If so, what software is necessary and what HF frequencies are the "common" ones?? MixW which I use with my Elecraft K2/100 has "receive only" capability. Respond directly or via this list. Hash: SHA1 Hi Phil. As far as I know there is no sound card software to transmit Pactor I. In it's wisdom SCS has kept that proprietary and patented, along with P II and P III. You get to buy their $1K modem if you want to transmit Pactor of any flavor. Phil Kane wrote: > Does anyone here operate Pactor I via soundcard? You can also buy old AEA PK-232MBX TNCs cheaply at hamfests and you-know-where, and later versions of the PK-232MBX included Pactor I. If your is older, Timewave will sell you the upgrade EPROMs that include Pactor. Some Kantronics multimode TNCs also support(ed) Pactor I. 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Right now I have 2 AEA PK-232MBX in service with two software-controlled Ten-Tec MF/HF receivers for receiving SITOR ("commercial AMTOR") USCG marine safety broadcasts and general monitoring of HF Marine Public Coast stations - yes, there are still some on the air in the US offering Morse, RTTY, and SITOR service to high-seas vessels. Both PK232MBXs will do Pactor I, and I do have the software for it. To use this with the K2 would require setting up a complex RS-232 switching arrangement to switch the K2 from the RigBlaster to the TNC and the TNC from the Ten-Tec receiver to the K2 - do-able because I do have the cross-over switch - but not exactly what I am looking for. Oh yes - this is in addition to the two PK-88s that handle my VHF packet and APRS transceivers and the soon-to-be-added 9600 baud TNC for UHF packet. I have tried Linux (Red Hat and Mandrake) in the past and have not been totally happy with the setup and the fact that several programs essential to both my hamming and my professional operations had no Linux equivalents. As I explained in another posted message, I can do P-I with my existing TNC and software but that was not what I was looking for. -- 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I would have no problem running it with an existing TNC and software, but I did want a soundcard solution. There was one about ten years ago that was written for a specific sound chip, but the author abandoned development on it. Thanks for the input. -- 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 From a Clearing in the Silicon Forest Beaverton (Washington County) Oregon _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. There was one > about ten years ago that was written for a specific sound chip, > but the author abandoned development on it. Pactor 1 was licensed to AEA for example. But they did not get it working like the enventors did - problems with memory ARQ, the throughput was less than in the original. I think there are soundcard programs around that do Pactor 1. For my taste it is less than we want to have in performance. I built the TRX-PTC into my K2 (still low power version) and I am very satisfied with it. I was testing it /mm in Panama, Venezuela and Columbia, and in Crete and it worked very well. (using Airmail & Winlink 2000 and connecting my mailbox at home in OE9). http://www.qsl.net/oe9fwv/bilder/trxptc_innen_fertig.jpg you see: K2IO-board - bluetooth board - relais board (switch to Ptc-2 or ext. modem) TRX-PTC board - EA3BLQ digital board speaker For the use in our emergency service we rely on SCS modems, the price may be high but the performance and reliability makes it worth. 73!
