What is the Pelican case number that most one uses for just the K2? I see
the 1400 case is just large enough to fit the K2 but there is only about .5 inch clearance on each side. The 1450 has more room but it is large and questionable as to whether this case would fit inside my checked baggage as well as the 1400 case would. For those that carry their K2 in a Pelican case, let me draw on your experience. I am not looking for a case to carry other than the K2, in other words, no accessories, just the K2. Hi Charlie and all,
I have also been doing some research on cases for a slightly different application and ordered two last might. Here is what I found. It is based on the need of transporting my K2 equipment in an emergency situation, and requires a water resistant but not water proof case. I am also on a budget. The first thing I have considered was an Igloo brand food chest. They have some nice looking ones with two wheels and a pull handle that are nice. I see them every time I go to the HEB supermarket down here so I have had the opportunity to brainstorm about them about 52 times this past year. Being a cheapskate I haven't bought one yet. I have several different types of picnic chests that I store outside here in Texas. The lids are all closed but every time I look at them they are filled with water. Considering the fact that we don't get much rain down here, I have come to the conclusion that these can not be considered water resistant. They are OK filled with food and ice in the back of your pickup truck but it you carry radio equipment in it on the way to the EOC and it rains I think you would have trouble. So I have eliminated these as possible radio cases even though they are nice boxes non the less. Ammo boxes seem to be an attractive option as they appear to be quite water resistant. I want to stack my K2 and KPA100/KAT100/EC2 in a plywood sideways "H frame". This seems to be a compact way of putting two related pieces of equipment together in a compact format. I find that the wiring between these two pieces of equipment is complicated and if you forget one cable or miss-recable them back together you can be in a lot of trouble in an emergency. The answer is to mount these two items together permanently and then just transport the assembly to the EOC. Most of the standard "ammo" cases are now plastic and called Sport Utility Dry Boxes. They are water resistant and are good to use outside, on boats, etc. Most of them are about 6 inches wide. The K2 and EC require at least 7 inches width or more. So one needs a bigger ammo case. Plano makes one that is about 7 inches wide but I feel it is rather light duty. I found a company that makes bigger and heavier duty ammo boxes. In fact these plastic boxes are actually made to hold ammo. The company name is MTM. I found their SPUD 0, 1, and 2 size boxes at the local Academy Sporting Goods store in the ammo aisle. These boxes are too small for my application but I found they make a SPUD 7 that is made to attach to the back of an ATV and can even be used as a seat. I also found a store on Amazon.com that sells these boxes for about $27 each. I have ordered two. I will let everyone know how well they work out. By the way, the second box will be for an Astron ss-300 switching supply and a Yaesu FT-8100R VHF/UHF rig to complete by EOC equipment requirements. Don't forget surplus equipment cases. I have seen old test equipment made for the miltary that had fiberglass and metal framed cases probably costing hundreds of dollars originally. If you find one that has the right shape for your needs, this would be a very nice option. This is a great thread - I looked at the Pelican cases, and ended up getting the powerport backpack with the inner "box." But I am still looking for a hard case that will hold the K2/tuner, cables etc. for air travel. The powerport box is great and while not giving the same protection of the Pelican, it is really quite protective. The backpack is well made, but there are less expensive alternatives. My daughter recent got a Dell laptop, and it had a mail-in offer for a free Swiss-Army knife backpack. It was actually nicer and more useful than the powerport. The powerport though, is very good and I use it regularly. I put the K2/100, Heil headphones/mic, and Hiel handy mic, the Elecraft paddle set, and cables in the box. The pack also holds my SGC-231 tuner and the dipole, and a Kenwood F6, with room for my lunch and some water! My telescoping mast is carried in a contractor's level case, which is made like a narrow backpack with grommets which allow attachment to the pack. Weight-wise, it is not bad - I can carry it a few miles without much problem - which at 52 and out-of-shape, that is not too bad. What was most difficult, was finding a case for the battery. What I came up with was a professional camera case. I use two 12V. 17 Ah. batteries hooked together. It will run the K2 and tuner for almost a week (for car camping, I have two 32 watt solar panels). I tried different cases, including coolers, and military amo cases. The camera case "blends-in" better. What was difficult was finding a case where the handle and shoulder strap are attached directly to support going under the case, supporting the battery, instead of a strap or handle attached only to the top, relying on the zipper or links to hold everything. The link to the camera case web site is certainly in the right direction. I am curious what others are doing in this regard. I use a 1450....actually 2 of them.... Originally I had hoped to have thew K2 face out the front,.,,, can't be done , the radio must sit sideways,,,, otherwise there is not enough protection ... AND THE SCREW FROM THE VENT WILL WACK THE TUNING KNOB The set sits upside down , and the bail is the way to remove it and set it back into the case,.,,, I have ended up with two 1 for the k2 1 for the ec2 ka/kt100.... in the lid area I have enough wire/ antenna as well as a kyocera Iridium satellite telephone solar panel & don brown controller,,,, a palm paddle & 20 amp ssbcw only 12 vdc supply ,, (in case I use the second case with the ka/kt100).... i'll try to get some pix on line... bill At 11:06 AM 9/11/2006, Thomas Beltran wrote: _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Wow, messed up that message subject line....let me try it again.....
I found a good solid metal case at Lowes for about 25 blucks. Not water proof, but it can take a knocking around in the baggage compartment of a plane. I also picked up an Anvil case at Dayton two years ago....for 20 bucks. Lee - K0WA In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply. These are a bit pricey but if you travel alot it may be
worth it. I found the 23x13x11 case at a swapmeet for $40. http://www.starcase.com/multi-application_foam_lined_cases.htm 73 Greg AB7R On Mon, 11 Sep 2006 12:54:10 -0000 "Charlie, W0YG" <[hidden email]> wrote: > What is the Pelican case number that most one uses for >just the K2?
