Pelican cases

jim-74
I am looking at the purchase of a pelican case to transport my K2.

I would be interested in learning what model case's any of the the members of this list have used.

Hi Jim,

I use the Pelican 1400 Case. It is big enough only for the K2. If you want
to place other stuff in with it you will need to go larger.

I use the 1450. Plenty of room for the K2 and my Begali key. There is
also plenty of space left to drop any adapters I need in there.

I'm similarly interested in cases for a K1.  Big enough to protect it,
but otherwise as small as possible.  Thanks for any recommendations!

So much depends on what all you want to pack with the K2 that it's somewhat
pointless to make a recommendation. For example, I've been looking at cases
to carry my K2, KAT100, power supply, microHam microKeyer, paddles, keyboard
and cabling. That's a significantly different load of equipment than someone
with a QRP K2 and a straight key.

Figure out everything you want to put in there, measure it, allow for an
inch between everything and an inch or more around the outside and come up
with the volume you need. Many sites list all the Pelican case sizes.

I'm currently look at SKB waterproof cases from www.markertek.com for my
needs.

Some of these protective cases are exceedingly good but the plastic versions
have hinges and lip around periphery that extend the size considerably.
Although they are made of structural foam, they add quite a bit to the
weight of a basic K2, even the K2/100.  I use a large sandwich/food box and
tuck headphones, key, antenna bits, tools and a little bubble wrap around to
fill it out.  This then can be carried in a small, lightweight hold-all bag
surrounded by clothes, food, bottled water or whatever the need for the
portable operation.  You can waste a lot of volume with cut-out foam padding
inside these cases.  It looks nice and tidy and everything has its place
which is good for, say emergency exercises but is not space-efficient.

I use a Pelican 1120.  It offers maximum protection, however like
David pointed out, it adds extra dimention to kx1.  The outside
dimentions are: 8.25" x 6.5" x 3.5".  If you can live with these
dimentions, you won't have to worry about the kx1 getting bumped or
knocked around.

On the bottom of my kx1 page, I have a picture of the rig in it's case.

Hi Mike,

Sorry about my earlier post.  I looked at K1 and somehow saw kx1.

Guess 1 coffee's not enough in the morning!

You might try Home Depot.  They periodically sell really nice lockable
aluminum cases filled with pluck-foam.  I bought three for about $15 each a
couple of years ago.

Of course the locks will only keep out honest crooks.  Real crooks will just
steal the case.
