Possible USB 2.0 mod

Kevin Rock
I was sitting down to breakfast when I looked at my email.  Seems like the questions and the answers occurred together.  For all you folks looking for a USB connection look here:

<http://www.elektor.com/news/usb-2-0-module-to-replace-db9-rs232-connector-on.1361885.lynkx?utm_source=UK&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=news>

Or a shorter address to the same place:

<http://dbaseserver.mistermail.nl/t/838415/5034024/197744/0/>

This article describes a drop in replacement to the DB9 RS-232 connection created by a local company (Hillsboro, Oregon).  Maybe this will solve the dilema.

73,
   Kevin.  KD5ONS

Too bad the datasheet won't  load (here, at least).

Re: Possible USB 2.0 mod

Brett Howard
Keep in mind that buying this rather than simply using a FTDI chipset
based USB to RS232 cable will negate the ability to use the P3 or
KPA500 properly...  But I suppose this could be installed into the P3
or KPA500 instead....

Re: Possible USB 2.0 mod

Bob Naumann W5OV
Not only will the use of such a thing negate the K3 talking to the P3 et al,
it does not resolve the USB driver / OS / software problem whatsoever.

This is a cool thing, but all it's doing is physically moving the same USB
to RS232 converter to inside your K3 instead of between the K3 and your
computer.

You will still be dealing with virtual com ports and all the other problems
that we all know and love with USB to RS232 converters. That said, the FTDI
chip set seems to be the most compatible with later OS releases (i.e.;
Vista, Win 7) but there are still software issues that may need to be
resolved.

73,

Bob W5OV

P.S. Congrats on your new call Brett!

Re: Possible USB 2.0 mod

Brett Howard
Thanks for the congrats on the new call and I must say that I agree w/
you on the connector....  I usually have a full up RS232 straight
through cable between my usb to RS232 adapter and then throw a few turns
through a BOCI before it enters the radio...

BTW and FYI BOCI stands for (Big 'Ol Chunk of Iron)
