Power Supply Questions

Norm Klieman
I wanted to thank everyone for their feedback. Just
about everyone told me to look at reviews on EHam.

Does anyone in the group have any personal experience
using or owning the Workman PS 35 power supply?

Any recommendations for a good 35 amp Linear supply
would be helpful too.

Thanks again for any feedback.

Norm,

Fairly hard to beat an Astron Power Supply.  The RS-35M is the workhorse I would recommend.  Meters to tell you what is going on, and it will run the any of the 100W Elecraft radios with some headroom to spare.

Re: Power Supply Questions

I would much recommend the new Samlex SEC-1235M switching power supply. It is very compact switching power supply with both volt and amp meters on the front panel. It's a lot more efficient than the old linear style of power supplies. Have been using one with my new K3 and it works great.

Norm,

Of course, the biggest issue with a switching supply is to be
confident that it won't generate lots of birdies. That's one of the
things you need to be aware of when reading PS reviews and manufacture
"hype"...

And the fact is most of the amateur radio oriented ones don't generate
lots of birdies. Here's the closing paragraph from a survey review
(QST Janurary 2000) of several amateur oriented switching power
supplies;

"For the majority of the casual fixed station and portable operators,
nearly any of the currently available switching power supplies should
provide acceptable performance. Carefully consider your operating
requirements and "weigh" your options."

The QST survey has more details about particular switching supplies
including the 23A sibling of the mentioned 35A  Samlex.

Re: Power Supply Questions

Jim Wiley-2
In reply to this post by Timothy Raymer-2

For those of you who might be interested, no matter what power supply
you are using, I have a nifty little circuit that converts a standard 1
mA DC milliampere meter to an expanded scale voltmeter reading 11 to 16
volts, with 13.5 volts at top center of the meter scale. Linear readout
too, no compressed readings at one end of the scale.  I have converted
the Astron RM-60 that I use for my ham shack to this method, and I can
tell you that the expanded scale sure makes setting the DC power bus to
the correct value a lot easier.

I also show a simple method for converting another 1 mA meter to an
ammeter (or you could use a switch select amps or volts using just one
meter).

If there are no meters in your supply, then you can use this circuit to
build up a set.  Surplus milliammeters are reasonably easy to find.

Send me an e-mail off list and I will respond with the details.  The
conversion costs about $10 in parts (not including meters), and you will
need to recalibrate the scale of whatever meter you end up using (change
the markings) - a not too difficult process.   Note that I will have to
finish creating a write-up of this, and I am right now swamped with
creating new Extra class exams for our VEC, but when that's done, I will
be able to put some time on this.

Even if you don't "hear" any hash from a switcher, I would suggest
you look at the transmitted spectrum. As a backup supply I have an
SEC-1223 which "sounds" okay but the transmitted signal is just
trashed. I love my Astron RS-35!

Re: Power Supply Questions

Stephen Prior
I have used my 1223 on a number of different rigs including the K3 without
any issues that I'm aware of.  What exactly do you mean Doug by the
transmitted signal being trashed?  I've never had a bad signal quality
report and the dc from the psu on a scope looks fine.

Or the Astron SS-30M  (Just open it up and tighten all the PC Board
