Power output question

David Douglass
I've noticed something with my K2/100 and wonder whether this is normal
behaviour or not ??

When I switch to a new band and send CW using full power, I don't seem to
get full output power on the first couple of dits (or dahs), according to
the bargraph power meter. After the first couple of dits the meter reads
full scale, and continues to do so whilst I remain on that band.

I also get the same thing when the turn the power back to 10 watts.. I only
get the first 1 or 2 LEDS lit with the first couple of dits, but then full
scale on the rest.

Any ideas..

Cheers

David, VK2NU

That's normal...
On a technical note: you have to stir the mojo for full effect.

This is normal operation. The K2 incorporates a digital (rather than
analog) ALC circuit. As such, it must sample the output power level in
order to be able to determine how much drive to apply. This takes
several  output cycles to accomplish and that's why you must apply a bit of
RF in order for the ALC to find itself and do what it needs to adjust for
proper output level.

RE: Power output question

That is normal behavior, David.

Your POWER control on the K2 is really a "requested power" control. It does
not directly change the power level. When you transmit, the K2 senses the
actual power output and compares the watts produced with what you have
requested by setting the POWER control, then the logic adjusts the output to
match the request - if it can.

So after changing bands, power level setting, etc., the K2 must make RF
before it can sense whether or not the actual power agrees with the
requested power. That can often take a "couple of dits". Indeed, if you make
the dits fast enough, it might take several before the logic has a chance to
update everything.

When you first power on, or make a variety of other changes, the logic
automatically sets the power output to minimum until you transmit and it can
see where you really want it set.

Also, that's why you can set the power control for a reading higher than the
K2 can produce. For example, a QRP K2 can be set to show 15 watts output on
any band, but it can't really produce 15 watts on all bands. It's usually
much closer to 10 watts on 10 meters, for example.
